Tito Ortiz: Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier video brawl 'good for the sport' and will help UFC 178 reach one million PPV buys   [View Full Version]

If there's anyone who knows a thing or three about mixed martial arts (MMA) rivalries, it's former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz.

Bad for the sport but good for the event.

It'll be a little easier to estimate as the event approaches, but I'd say that's a good guess at this point.

I'm gonna be honest, I may buy it now.

All this calling the scuffle a "black eye" for MMA is such crap when they say it the same week as Grispi and Kopenhaver.

Yeah I'm thinking more like 7-800K, doubt it hits 1 mil.

The hype is strong with this one. If it had two title fights, I'd say it hits a million. 7-800k is certainly feasible and probable. UFC 178 is completely stacked, top to bottom. My ONLY knock of the card (can't really knock it for not having two titles, although I would love all PPV's to have that prerequisite) is that Dominick Cruz vs Takeya Mizugaki isn't the co-main.

As for the scuffle being bad for the sport, I don't think it is. Let's not kid ourselves, who wasn't jizzing their pants over Lawler-Brown because we knew it would be sheer violence? This is fighting. It is nice to appreciate the technical aspects, the martial arts spirit, sportsmanship, etc, and as the sport grows that is more important. But every now and then, you just want a fight. A legit, bad blood brawl.

There is a difference between the brawl (PR stunt or not) and Grispi and Kopenhaver. First of all, no one is surprised about War Machine's recidivist shit leopard ass. And second, athletes from all sports commit similar or worse crimes every day. There have been murderers and criminals in every sport. Let's look up how many NFL players were arrested last week. Hell, let's compare per year averages, I would be shocked if the NFL doesn't lead by a large percentage.

It's not the sport that makes you a piece of shit, it's the person. Just like anything in life. Few things are inherently evil, it's people that do evil things.

The best part of it all is that ist is short-term desperation. Hot shotting in pro wrestling. Failure of the UFC is imminent.

I'm going to buy the event tbh. It has nothing to do with the brawl though. This card is crazy on paper and that's how ppvs should be. If they went with this format of stacking ppvs (not just making them top heavy) and let the free cards be what they are I would honestly order every ppv.

I plan on watching it with my dad. I watched the Cerrone/Miller main card with him and he's on the verge of becoming a fan of the sport and I'm hoping this card will push him over. If the fights are half as good as they look on paper I'll be happy.

Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier
Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier (I wish they had some 5 round co-mains...)
Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero
Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano
Bobby Green vs. Jorge Masvidal
Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki
Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard
Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson
Kevin Lee vs. Jon Tuck
Manny Gamburyan vs. Cody Gibson

Tito is right. This event is good for MMA because it makes it interesting to people who don't know about or necessarily like MMA and good for UFC 178 PPV buys because it puts marginal buys over the edge to check it out.

The war machine and grispi stuff is exponentially more damaging to mma then this was.
