Russian mixed martial arts legend Fedor Emelianenko has announced his retirement after knocking out Brazilian veteran Pedro Rizzo.

It took Emelianenko just 44 seconds to knock out Brazilian veteran Pedro Rizzo on Thursday, putting him on the ground with a serious of punches and then finishing with more strikes to the head.

"I think it is time I quit," Emelianenko said.

"My family influenced my decision. My daughters are growing without me, that's why it's time to leave."

Best ground and pound from the guard I may have ever seen.

And there goes the man that single handedly changed the face of the heavyweight division for ever. Fedor will be missed

I wish I could have seen Fedor vs Cain while both were in their prime

The thing I liked most about Fedor - he does not look like much outside the ring, a slightly rounded Russki, some would say, but his natural athleticism and reflexes made top level opponents look like it was their first fight.

A lot of people say certain things about his lack of credible opposition later in his career, and of shady dealings with M1, but a true fan of MMA should be able to look past that and see what he has done for the sport. Watching Fedor's highlight reel got me into MMA. Thanks Fedor

Good for him. He was a legend to some, a myth to others.

Matt Lindland was ROBBED against Fedor in 2007....the judges were drunk off Vodka in St. Petersburg, Russia!

he got robbed of a takedown because Fedor held the ropes but to say Lindland would have won the fight because of it is a HUGE stretch. I wanted Matt to win as bad as anyone but come on

Lindland grabbed the ropes too. Fedor was just better at it.

I'm glad I lived to see his entire run.
Guys like him and Anderson,,normally those are things in other sports that happened a long time ago in some damn near mythical era that you only hear about.
With this sport we got to see as it unfolded. No other HW has ever cemented the legacy Fedor has and I wish him all the best.
But who knows maybe he's got a few more in him?

People can try to discredit Fedor all they want but in my heart, Fedor is the best fighter I have ever seen.
