A favorite to get a shot against Urijah Faber for the interim UFC Bantamweight title, Michael McDonald will not get his opportunity in July as a hand injury has put him on the shelf.

Wrestling Observer founder Dave Meltzer reported in his Thursday update that UFC president Dana White said McDonald's hand was injured but didn't go into details about the severity or how long he would be out for. Meltzer added that one source told him that McDonald was the favorite to get the nod against Faber.

As of this writing, McDonald had not acknowledged the injury on Twitter. Faber's opponent will be announced on Friday night's edition of The Ultimate Fighter Live. He was to fight UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz in the main event of UFC 148 in Las Vegas on July 7, but Cruz suffered a torn ACL in training and will be out indefinitely.

It pretty much has to be Barao now. I was looking at the roster of BW's, pretty much everyone else who is lurking around the top, is coming off a loss or just has a win.

Bowels - Coming of loss to Faber

Jorgensen - Coming off loss to Barao

A dark horse to maybe get the shot, Yves Jabouin. I personally don't think he should get it, but after his performance this past Tues. he might get the nod.

Maybe Hatsu Hioki will cancel his fight with Lamas and drop down to BW.

theyve got to get Menjivar a replacement & let Barao get the shot. only person that makes sense now

I wonder if this who Dana was going to announce as the opponent officially tonight or whatever.

Or if he was an option and they found out about the injury before now and have found a new opponent.

Or they picked him and now have to find someone else and no replacement named tonight.

FastKnockout » Posted 9/24/10 8:39:00PM

Barao was my first choice, anyway.

i think these injuries further prove that we as fans need all fighters to fight under one banner instead of multiple orgs. The more fighters in the pool, the more fighters to have fill in, in the event an injury forces someone out.

All these injuries also show how hard all of these athletes train and go 100% all the time. You dont see it in the other professional sports as they dont train as hard in practice as they do games/events. It shows how dedicated MMA athletes are and that they deserve to be paid more. At least the UFC offers insurance now, which is great for the UFC athletes. The trouble is with combat sports, its really hard to train without the risk of injuries.

Well Dana still announcing new opponent tonight, so they've got somebody. Ivan, Barao or whoever.
