Gilbert Melendez wanted a big UFC name next, but doesn’t see the same eagerness from them   [View Full Version]

One of the best Lightweight fighters in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) today, Gilbert Melendez, has long desired to get his chance to enter the world-famous Octagon and test his skills against the best of the best in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ranks to prove that he is deserving of being called the best 155-pound fighter in the world.

Rumors ran rampant last year that "El Nino" was set to take his talents to the eight-walled cage, but were quickly shot down as he was matched up with Jorge Masvidal at Strikeforce: "Melendez vs. Masvidal" on Dec. 17, 2011.

Gilbert's training partners, Jake Shields and Nick Diaz, made the jump from Strikeforce to the UFC in 2010 and 2011, respectively, but he was left to hold the fort down with the San Jose based promotion as its poster boy Lightweight champion. Though a move over the world's largest MMA promotion to join his Cesar Gracie trained companions isn't in his near future, he would settle for Zuffa to send down some of the best Lightweights currently in the UFC to challenge him for his Strikforce throne.

Those pleas, unfortunately, have fallen on deaf ears and everyone, for the time being, is staying put with their respective organizations.

This guy just needs to be signed by the UFC. A 3rd match with Thomson isn't really doing him any good imo. There's no one left for the guy in Strikeforce and i'll be real disappointed if he's not competing at the level of competition he should be before he's past his prime.

Why should UFC guys go down from the big show to SF?

Should be the other way.

yeah i think the ufc just needs to absorb whats left of the LW div in SF. they dont need to take them all just the top few. although im not a big fan of melendez's, i still think he deserves to fight the best in the world, just bring him to the ufc already

I honestly don't even think he could beat the top guys in the UFC. I mean I honestly can't see him beating Edgar, Henderson, Maynard, Pettis, Diaz, Miller or maybe even Guida.

What if someone went over and faced Gil and beat him? Then what would that fight do? Fight only in SF, or both or just come back to the UFC.

I think every weight class in SF is extremely thin and the whole organization should just be absorbed by the UFC. Even the HW division.

Gil had his chance to sign with the UFC and instead chose Strikeforce so he shouldn't be complaining.

The HW division is already absorbed into the UFC, the only HW's not in the UFC are Barnett and Cormeir.

The bottom line is....Zuffa needs to finally get rid of Strikeforce and bring all of the fighters over to the UFC. It will definitely happen eventually but I wish it would happen NOW.

I agree somewhat I dont believe he could come to the UFC and be champ but I do Believe he could beat a lot of the top guys there.

and Gil has already beat Guida close fight but he got the w

I thought that was one of the weirder scorecards i'd ever heard.

I tFeel Melendez is wasting his time in Strikeforce...Now is the time, end his time in strikeforce and move him into the UFC...

Pookie » Posted 4/8/07 11:48:00PM

But yeah, i think GIl would do great in the UFC. It's all about style match-ups but i think he's well-rounded enough to give most fighters problems in some area, and has the wrestling skills to enforce his will against most.

I'd take him over Maynard and Benson.

Why would any Ufc contenders wanna go to strikeforce for a title shot

The best is Ufc. That is the goal Ufc champ not
Strikeforce champ.
Sign alvarez to strikeforce to keep Gilbert happy
