Almost as soon as it seemed a reality, a rematch between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit is not happening.

When contacted today by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), Diaz manager Cesar Gracie said "no" when asked if a rematch recently announced is a reality. He declined further comment.

UFC president Dana White issued a tweet late Tuesday that said Condit had accepted a rematch with Diaz and was headed to Las Vegas on Friday, presumably, to finalize a contract for the fight.

Condit manager Malki Kawa did not respond to a request for comment on the status of the bout but today confirmed the rematch via Twitter.

Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Diaz needs more time to get his running legs under him?

I bet it still ends up happening.

Both Gracie and Kawa know that this is going to be a big moneymaker. They're both going to do what they have to do to drum up interest and to make sure their fighters get the biggest payday they can possibly get.

With all the talk about Diaz's love for marathons, I figured Diaz would've been pumped to see Condit's gameplan.

Just as importantly, Dana White knows this might be the ONLY moneymaker for Condit with St. Pierre out. It might be different if Diaz had that belt but my guess is the UFC has doubts about Condit's power to generate pay-per-view buys, if that's the road they go with this one.

The success of welterweight title fights for the last three or four years is built around Georges St. Pierre's name alone. There was 775,000 buys for his fight against Hardy and 800,000 buys for his fight against Jake Shields. If you replaced St. Pierre with Condit's name against either of those fighters, the UFC would be looking at a third of the buys. For that, Diaz is probably the second most popular fighter in that division. The UFC needs him because Condit alone would probably pull in Edgar numbers.

The UFC brass will force this. It's a win-win-win on all sides. Buys, drum up momentum for Condit if he fights GSP, luck out and get the fight more people want to see between Diaz and GSP. Whatever happens, they win.

Here's an idea, Diaz was serious about quitting.

Maybe if he meant it, he was smoking in the middle of his post-fight piss test.

His UFC contract would put him in legal hot water for this.

Back to Strikeforce?
It was a duel contract.

and the whole contract was based on him fighting GSP according to Cesar.
which isnt going to happen, especially now that the rematch is off.

so maybe they have a way out

This is obviously a ploy to get more money out of the ufc. I don't see how and why Diaz and his camp would not take the fight. Furthermore, I serious doubt Diaz sustained any major injury from the last fight.

It's all about money.

He didn't. He even avoided a suspension by the AC and, according to the guy that broke the story (FrontRowBrian), it's not an injury issue.

I agree. I'll bet this 'on-again, off-again' drama is mostly about negotiating a sweet payout to make this fight happen. Cha-ching!
