UFC Cuts Cole Escovedo   [View Full Version]
FastKnockout » Posted 9/24/10 8:39:00PM

Lost amidst the Strikeforce/Showtime extension and busy weekend in combat sports was the news the UFC has cut bantamweight Cole Escovedo, confirmed by the fighter via Twitter.

He made his UFC debut in May, losing a unanimous decision to Renan Barao at UFC 130. He followed that up with a second round TKO loss to Takeya Mizugaki at September's UFC 135 and a unanimous decision defeat to Alex Caceres at November's UFC on Fox 1.

The 30-year-old is the answer to a minor MMA trivia question as he was the WEC's first featherweight champion, winning the belt back in October 2002 with a first round submission win over Philip Perez. He defended the title successfully once before losing the belt to some guy named Urijah Faber nearly four years later, the first WEC title reign for the "California Kid".

Strike 3, you're out.

Cole reminds me of a couple of fighters.....the ones that just can't put it together in the UFC but are golden everywhere else. Kings of the minor leagues.

Saw this coming a mile away. He looked really bad against Bruce Leeroy and Mizugaki

Here is my interview with Escovedo.

I live in the central valley and I think I may have met and talked to Escovedo one time. If he is the same person I met, then I am all for him being cut.

I met this guy at a poker table at a casino - in my home town of Fresno. I found out he was an MMA fighter so I chatted him up.

We were talking about Uriah Faber and I said I think Uriah literally beats his opponents with athleticism and nothing more. He rolled his eyes at me as if I had no clue what I was talking about and then proceeded to tell me many of the fighters who faced Faber should have never taken those fights.

And then I said - well, maybe Faber should move to the ufc light weight division?

He rolled his eyes again and said - Faber is in a good position - why rock the boat?

And then I said - yeah I guess you're right.

*This conversation occurred around the time when Faber was seemingly dominant in the WEC.*

The content of what this person (Escovedo??) said was not rude but it was how he said it and the condescending tone in which he said it that made me not want to continue talking to him about MMA.

Now that I have had time to reflect on the incident, I am almost positive it was Escovedo. The guy I met was of Hispanic heritage and may have had Native American blood in him. He was taller than I was and slim - just like Escovedo.

Anyway, For his last two fights, he did not respect his opponents which is why he lost miserably.

Mods, can we put this interview in the interview archive? I swear this conservation took place.

If you can't beat Bruce Le-Roy then you dont deserve to be in the UFC.

If you can't beat Bruce Le-Roy then you dont deserve to be in the UFC.

To be fair, Cacares looked GREAT in that fight and has improved dramatically since his stint on TUF.

I think I really have met and talked with Escovedo. I did not know him at the time - in fact, most mma fans did not know him at the time.

Anyway, I would have gotten his name but I chose not to talk to him after his condescending responses.

The guy fights out of Fresno, which is my home town. The probability that it was him is higher than the probability that it wasn't him. Furthermore, the guy I met was slim and a few inches taller than I was - which would match the description of Escovedo.

But anyway, I was just messing around but the conversation really did take place and I do believe it was Escovedo.

I unfortunetely saw two of those fights live

viceroid » Posted 12/20/11 3:00:00PM

He made me lose money on the fight against Barao...

CUT HIM OUT YEAH!
