A bantamweight bout between Michael McDonald (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Alex Soto (6-0-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has been promoted to the Spike TV "UFC Prelims" special for this weekend's UFC 139 event.

It's taken the spot of a middleweight bout between Tom Lawlor (7-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Chris Weidman (6-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), which now will stream on Facebook.

Spike TV officials today confirmed the change with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), though a reason for the switch wasn't given.

UFC 139 takes place this Saturday, Nov. 19, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Recent Strikeforce champ Dan Henderson returns to the octagon to meet ex-UFC champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the night's headliner.

In addition McDonald vs. Soto, Spike TV airs light heavyweights Ryan Bader (12-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) vs. Jason Brilz (18-4-1 MMA, 3-3 UFC) as part of its one-hour broadcast.

The 20-year-old McDonald, a former Tachi Palace Fights champion, is 3-0 under the Zuffa banner with a WEC victory over Clint Godfrey and UFC wins over Edwin Figueroa (which earned a "Fight of the Night" award) and Chris Cariaso. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt has now won six straight fights. He meets Soto, a former U.S. Army war veteran and U.S. Navy dolphin trainer who now makes his UFC debut fresh off a six-fight win streak that recently was halted with a draw against Seiji Akao (15-4-1) at June's DEEP 54 event in Japan.

Da fuck?

EDIT: I guess if McDonald wins he'll be thrown into the BW title picture.

This is BS. I think Lawlor Wiedman is going to be a heckuva fight. With Wiedman winning of course.

It's good by me. I don't have the chance to watch the prelims and I'm a Mayday fan, so this works.

Spike wanted a guaranteed KO to kick off the broadcast.
Mayday vs some last minute rookie... YOP

Bullshit, this sucks. McDonald hasnt looked that good in his 2 fights, and Soto is being brought in on short notice. Lawlor always brings it and has heavy hands, as does Weidman. This sucks.

I would like to know the explanation for the change
And why not dos anjos vs tibau. Or torres vs pace.

Spike's revenge!

JoeWarren33 » Posted 4/27/09 4:41:00PM

agreed shawn! this is some serious b.s.
You would think UFC would want to show Lawlor/Weidman. The guy brings comedy to the ring, and goes all out. That Simpson.Lawlor fight was intense!

I see Lawlor coming through in this one.
Or at least hope.

If they're priming McDonald for a title shot, they should probably stop spoon-feeding him opponents. Can't exactly go from Soto to Benevidez without serious shellshock.

I will agree that it sucks that Lawlor/Weidman gets bumped, but highly disagree saying McDonald hasn't looked that good in his last two fights. His debut fight with Figueroa was great. People were going nuts after that fight talking about both guys. He did stumble some in the Cariaso fight. So at least say he didn't look that good for his last fight.

Interesting choice. I wonder if the UFC is realizing that smaller weight fights make for more exciting fights usually, and are worried about putting two 185+ fights on the prelim that is supposed to get people excited to buy.

If that was the case, then they should have chosen Pace/Torres or Tibau/Dos Anjos.

He didnt look good at all in the Figueroa fight, at all. Hand it to Figueroa for not being an easy opponent but McDonald wasnt very good that night.
