Manager: Demian Maia Wants to Fight Jake Shields at 185   [View Full Version]

Jake Shields hasn't had the best year so far inside the cage, and there has been some minor speculation that he might like to return to middleweight after two losses in a row at welterweight. While there's no shame at all in losing to Georges St. Pierre and Jake Ellenberger, especially with the fact that he had to deal with the death of his manager and father going into the second fight, it is believed the former Strikeforce middleweight champion might be a better fit up at 185. If that is the case, Demian Maia's manager Eduardo Alonzo told Tatame that he wants his fighter to get the first crack at Shields:

"It’s a personal desire, but I guess it’d be a good fight, an interesting challenge for Demian. For his record and skills as a fighter, I’m guessing it’d be interesting", said the manager to TATAME.

I don't think Shields is all that, but that's a bad matchup for Maia.

Unless he thinks 185 will be his new permanent home, I see no reason for Shields to move up just to fight Maia. Really I just want to see Maia Sonnen 2, winner gets Andy. Of course, if Maia wins and rematches Andy it would be a pretty weak fight what with Silva hiding behind Mirgliota...maybe this time he will just push the ref into Maia as a means of attack.
In conclusion, Shields needs to fight a good wrestler or a mid tier guy at WW to get his feet on the ground. I only mentioned wrestler because Kos is still available and some of these new guys with wrestling backgrounds would be perfect fighters to be made an example of by Shields.

How is that a bad fight for Maia? Demian's standup is more fluid and his BJJ is second to none. If anything, I'd say its a bad matchup for Shields

I want him to fight Shields too. Great fight.

Shields has fought very well at 185, arguably better than he fights at 170. I believe he's only fought there 3 times but 3-0 against Hendo, Mayhem, and Lawler is impressive. In some fights it has looked like the 170 cut affects his endurance. I'd like to see him jump up to 185 and a Maia fight would be sweet.

Perhaps, but my thought is he either needs to get back at it in WW or make the permanent switch to 185.

I think this is a bad match up for Shields. Maia is getting pretty good standing, and he would handle Shields on the ground.

I've come to terms that Maia is becoming the ground version of Brandon Vera. At one time we thought they'd both finish all of their opponents with their tenacity and skill in their area of expertise.

Vera finished his first 4 UFC opponents and has finished only 1 in his last 9 fights.
Maia finished his first 5 UFC opponents and has finished zero of his last 7 fights.

In BJJ competitions he's elite; there's no doubt. Others can keep him up on a pedestal in MMA, but to me he loses to anyone with good wrestling and submission defense. I'm glad to see that he's working hard on his stand-up though and progressing at a fast rate as it gives him a new dynamic and he's fun to watch regardless of a lack of killer instinct.

I'm a big fan of Jake Shields and I'll tell you this, I knew him going to 170 was a bad idea... HE HAS NEVER LOOKED GOOD AT 170. Go look at his past fights against Daley or anyone, he always looked terrible at that weight

At 185, he can go 100% for 5 rounds no problem. He did so against Mayhem and Hendo (after surviving the H-bomb even).

I like Jake alot but Im only interested in seeing him move back up to that weight. It's a shame that Dana basically told him to go to 170.

I think youre absolutely right, but I dont think Shields wrestling poses as big a threat as you would think to Maia. His wrestling isnt powerful at all, it is practical, much like Sonnen. Practical, relentless, great against Hendos and Rampages, great against Marquarts etc bad against smaller faster timing fighters.

And sonnen is much better.

Chael's takedowns are very powerful.

Don't think Rampage would get taken down by Shields though, Rampage stuffs most weak-but persistent takedown types.
