UFC lightweight contender Nate Diaz's 170-pound experiment is over, at least for now.

It's not that his two recent losses in the division have discouraged him from giving it another shot. It's not even that he was influenced by an incredible UFC 135 win over Japanese legend Takanori Gomi.

No, the truth is Diaz (14-7 MMA, 9-5 UFC) feels like he has a duty to stay at lightweight for now. A quick survey of the division's landscape, and Diaz realized he belongs among the sport's best 155-pounders.

"A lot of the guys I beat are top contenders at 155," Diaz told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Melvin Guillard is about to get a title shot and (Clay) Guida, I thought I beat up Guida pretty good.

"I can't stay at 170 when all the guys I'm whooping are at the top of the division."

He looks better at LW. I said this in my camp forum but Diaz just needs to stop being content with being in bad situations. He's got some serious skills.

Stay at LW and not face those guys that will just grapple him untill you are fighting to be no.1 contender. Or might not have to face the grapplers b/c he already faced some of them.

Diaz will stay at 155 until he loses, then it's back up to 170.

But to be fair, if he can't beat those grapplers, he doesn't deserve to be at the top of the division.

He needs to stop complaining about all of these guys who just come to wrestle and not to fight - as he would express, and just learn some better TDD. If he does, he could be a beast, cos his jits is top notch and his striking has improved leaps and bounds lately.

I can see Nate running through errrr body and ending up champ!

Same with his bro, once he gets through BJ

I scored the fight for him against both Guida and Maynard. Maynard IMO, lost the last two rounds, and Guida had his least active fight ever, he did nothing but hold position.

Ditto. I also had him winning the fight with Dong Hyun Kim. Diaz was infinitely more effective in every area of the game, except stalling. He handled Kim standing, and when Kim got his takedowns, he maybe landed a punch, while Nate elbowed him in the face repeatedly. Oh well!

Oh, for the best prediction ever, check out pmoney's post in this thread Diaz vs. Gomi

I agree with both of you. Its not so much a matter of Nate Diaz not being able to handle wrestlers. Its a matter of the judges not knowing how to score his fights.

I feel like that topic has been done to death tho, so I'll refrain from stating what I think is wrong with the judging.

Dude, I wish I would have know about this thread earlier! You set a standard I can only hope to come close to Pookie. That is as flagrant and glorious as an "I told you so" can get. I bow humbly.... For once.

Losing by getting lay and pray is still losing by domination, just ask GSP. I think Nick learned his lesson. You dont fall into guard you spring back up ala Cain Valasquez. Fighters are learning how to not transition to their backs, till then, he sucks against wrestlers.

KungFuMaster » Posted 5/17/11 11:13:00PM

Diaz looks very good at 155. At 155, his peppering punches have more effect than it did at 170. At 170, fighters would simply walk right through his punches and take him down.

155 is a good weight for Diaz but he will still have trouble with the likes of Guida and other fast moving wrestlers.
