Japanese superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama isn't planning on shedding any sexiness, but he will look to drop about 15 pounds.

Akiyama recent revealed to Japanese news outlet Sponichi he's intending to drop down to the welterweight division in an effort to snap out of a three-fight losing streak.

Additionally, Akiyama, who recently closed his gym in Japan, said he hopes to shift his training base to North America and work alongside UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Wow, Sexy had no cardio at 185....does anyone really think that it will improve at 170

If he trains alongside St. Pierre, he can probably make a decent transition. St. Pierre has some of the best conditioning training in MMA. Akiyama will have a size advantage, but if he wants to make the switch successfully, he needs to cut back on the weight training.

It's not like he doesn't have weight to lose. Cutting doesn't always equal worse cardio, sometimes it helps because you aren't carrying around as big of a load.

I think this a great move for The Sex, and it's just too bad he didn't make it sooner.

It needs to be muscle mass. If it's water, he will not solve his cardio issues at all.

I'm just wondering how he hasn't been cut yet. Should be a 4 straight losses, as Belcher "won" their fight.

Akiyama is very over rated
I don't think a drop to 170 will help
I bet fitch will face him in japan or
Given his three losses and hardy 4 its only fair that they fight one another for a job

sounds good, but I don't like how the UFC makes fighters drop weight, when they don't know anything about weight and health. Look at James Irvin, he cut weight and looked horrible physically, and was too drained to fight.

what evidence do you have that the ufc "makes" fighters cut weight? There have been reports of them pressuring fighters, but it is usually in cases where the guy should probably cut. Like Oliviera.

Also, why do you think the UFC doesn't "know anything about weight and health"? I'd be willing to wager they've got some really good doctors on the payroll.

I don't think Irvin was ever pressured to drop, I don't think anyone, including the UFC brass thought it was a good idea. Irvin made the decision on his own (maybe I'm wrong, I have been many times before) Irvin wanted to re invent himself and gain a size advantage. I will agree with you though that that was a perfect example of when a fighter is cutting too much weight.

I agree with Pookie, Sexyama needs to drop the muscle mass, the guy has a ton of muscle from his judo days and could easily drop the 15 lbs by leaning out. If he just tries to cut water he will look as bad as Irvin did.

maybe hardy/akiyama but fitch has nothing to gain from fighting someone on a 3 fight losing streak. i thought he lost to belcher too so that would've made it 4.
