Strikeforce has made it's plans to crown a new Middleweight Champion following the departure of Jake Shields, and it won't be a tournament. The promotion has annnounced a determination match for August 21 to crown a new champion, and it'll be Tim Kennedy vs. Ronaldo Souza. The fight will be the co-main event to the headliner, Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Lawal vs. Rafael Cavalcante (Feijao) for the title.

No, but SF officially let him go.

I like this by SF, at least we get to see the MW title fought for sooner than later.

surprised they gave the fight to kennedy who not miller??

Other fighters may be better than Tim, like Hendo, Lawler, Miller, but I think SF is saving them. I think they picked the 2 best least popular guys to fight each other that way when one looses, SF doesn't lose a good name for future title fights.

Maybe SF is saving them, but I kinda feel like Coker is pissed that most of those guys decided not to do the tourney. I would have much rather seen the tourney personally, but I can respect the fighters not wanted to go through all that to get to the title.

I like both Jacare and Kennedy a lot. You gotta think Jacare is going to be a heavy favorite going into this one but man, does Kennedy have some heart or what?

I guess in the end my head will say Jacare but my heart will say Kennedy. I just hope for a war!

This title match shouldnt be questioned.

Kennedy has won his last 4 all finishes, and 3 of those coming in SF.
Souza has won his last two & in SF.

Hendo just fought for the title and lost. Miller fought for the title & lost and got a win over a can, shouldnt get a title shot. Lawler just lost to Babalu, then who knows what weight babalu is fighting at.

With this fight already being announced, why not make it a title fight, so SF can get a title holder and not have to wait for matchups for the title later in the year.

This will be a good fight, but I think it says a lot about the talent level of SF's MW devision. Lots of guys on the decline.

Couldn't agree more. Props.

But this isn't like Strikeforce. They are giving title shots to the two most deserving fighters instead of the most popular.... since when? Does this mean Werdum gets the shot after all... lol

Henderson, Lawler, and Miller all have recent losses to the fighter that just departed Strikeforce.

Strikeforce doesn't want a second-tier belt.

I agree with most of the posts. Both of these guys are on WINNING streaks. And should be fighting for the vacant title. A championship belt, needs to be earned, and Hendo, Miller are not in a winning way right now, and Robbie was getting smashed by Manhoef, until he hit his last second KO punch! And then got pumeld by Sobral. Sure Mayhem beat Stout. But!!!??? Who is Tim Stout??(not bashing) Also I dont see Babalu making 185 so he is out for sure!

Jacare FTW. Then hopefully UFC will pick him up soon too.

It would be sad to see him over there though. He lprobably wouldn't fare very well.
