Chris Leben Expecting To Beat Aaron Simpson "Rather Easily" At TUF 11 Finale   [View Full Version]

And if his comments recently are any indication, his win last time out has given him an extra boost of confidence going into Saturday's fight. "There was a lot of pressure. My fight before that (against Rosholt) was a terrible performance on my part and going into the Jay Silva fight I knew that I needed to change things. I went out to Oregon for over a month, just buckled down, put my nose to the grindstone and trained hard, and it definitely showed when I went out there. When I perform at my best, I think I beat anybody. [Simpson] is a phenomenal athlete and he’s obviously accomplished a lot in his wrestling career. Obviously there are some holes in his game – wrestling is his number one attribute, he doesn’t move his head a ton and he’s a little bit heavy on his feet. It’s gonna be a great fight, and if I execute my game plan and perform the way that I know I can, I think I should take him out rather easily."

I think Simpson is going to dump Leben on his head repeatedly en route to a decisive victory....at least I hope....can't stand Chris.

What can't you stand about him?

I'd be surprised to see anybody walk through A-Train "Rather Easily"

Leben has got an iron chin and some heavy hands for sure, but that's about all he relies on. Simpson has shown he's got tenacity, cardio, great wrestling, heavy hands, and a hell of a chin. He took some massive shots from Tom Lawlor and hung in there tough. Nobody is going to just walk through a guy like that unless they happen to land a huge bomb early IMO.

A-Train via UD was my pick.

I believe Chris Leben is "Rather Mistaken" if he thinks he's going to beat this guy easily or at all, frankly. Chris is always looking for that one big punch, and that simply isn't a good gameplan. You should be trying to win every second of the fight AND looking for that bomb at the same time.

Simpson also seems to be able to eat some pretty damn hard shots and recover very quickly. I'm really impressed with this guy, personally. He's so damn fast, has great wrestling, awesome conditioning, hits hard. I think he just needs to tighten up his standup and he can be a top10 or 5 guy down the road, he's pretty reckless on the feet sometimes.

simpsons road isnt very long at this point, im not sure how far down it he can get. dudes already like 37 or something

BlueSkiesBurn » Posted 6/1/08 3:18:00PM

He's 35. Shane Carwin didn't start until his mid thirties, I'd say he's done alright.

There was that other guy that started at like age 33 what was his name I can't remember it?

oh yeah Randy Couture

noahgenda » Posted 5/28/09 4:34:00PM

well none of these guys are actually just getting started in their 30's

and this is kind of an aside, and i know i will catch hate for it, but im not really that impressed by randy coutures career. obviously i think he is a good fighter and he has done some impressive things - im not bashing him at all, i just dont understand why so many people deify him.

as far as me saying i dont know how much longer of a road simpson has to get down, and then you comparing him to other fighters getting their first fights "late,", i dont see it. are you predicting him to fight into his 40's? cause it probably isnt going to happen, and hes only going to get slower if he does. and i dont think carwin has really transitioned and honed his striking game significantly over the last couple years. he has tons of power in his hands and has from day 1. i just dont see a 35 year old wrestler vastly improving his striking technique in 3 years to become a world beater

not to say i think simpson is anything close to a bum, if anything he is a problem for most guys in the division, and i picked him to win this fight by UD. i just dont see the championship contender "down the road" logic

BlueSkiesBurn » Posted 6/1/08 3:18:00PM

We actually agree on something again, noah. I've been mulling around ever posting that but since you did it first I'll back you up. I'm not a Couture fan, either. I've never been impressed.

Aether » Posted 4/26/07 1:42:00AM

no one said he would be a championship contender. Possibly the reason you don't understand that logic is because it was never written anywhere.

He's 7-0, you're talking like he's been around for so long that there's no room for improvement, or that he's going to retire any day now. You're very mistaken if you think a 35 year-old fighter of this caliber doesn't have time to improve to a top 10 ranking.

noahgenda » Posted 5/28/09 4:34:00PM

please explain the difference between top 5 and contender

Aether » Posted 4/26/07 1:42:00AM

"could be a top 10 or 5 guy down the road"

and

"could be a championship contender"

Are these the same thing in your mind? Many top 10 fighters never come close to a title shot or being considered contenders, and often a guy ranked as high as 4th or 5th will never actually get a shot.

The difference is very obvious, you just took a small sentence fragment in order to twist my meaning to suit your argument.
