Faber: The Plan Is To Stay At 145 And Only Drop To 135 For Superfights   [View Full Version]
DCRage » Posted 8/3/07 12:38:00PM

Following his valiant effort in a one-sided loss to Jose Aldo at WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber," many people in the MMA community have been calling for "The California Kid" to drop down to 135 lbs. and make a run at the title that Dominick Cruz currently owns. But in speaking with Larry Pepe on this week's edition of Pro MMA Radio, Faber made it clear that he still has intentions of staying at 145 lbs. while only dropping down a weight class for super fights. Urijah also seemed to be pretty uninterested in a fight with former bantamweight kingpin Miguel Torres, which is a bout that still has some intrigue despite both fighters' recent struggles.

He should drop to 135lb. I would love to see him there. To me he is like BJ at 170lb he can beat most guys in that weight class except GSP. Faber could be just as dominant at 135 as BJ was at 155.

He says he'll think about it after teammate Joe Benavidez has finished his current run, he could be closing in on a title shot.

That's not gonna do him any good to drop down anyhow. Jose Aldo's camp has already said he's interested in fights at 135.

The term "SUPERFIGHT" gets thrown around very loosly noadays. It doesnt set well with me. I wouljnt consider Faber dropping to 135 and fighting Cruz,l or Torres a superfight. Sorry about the rant.

Oh, I agree and given that Angel Torres has lost two in a row that's not even the same fight it would have been. I don't think there is a "superfight" for Faber at 135.

I agree 100%. GSP/Silva is the only fight worthy of the title that could be made right now. Machida/Shogun 2 would come closest to deserving the label in the near future.

This.

If his buddy Benavidez falls a bit far back in the featherweight rankings, a move to 135 that puts Faber up against whoever the champion is at the time would make more sense.

Again, Jose Aldo and his camp have said they want to make a run at 135. If Faber couldn't beat him at 145....

this could only be about a torres superfight imo. both guys were dominant champions a year or so ago, but now look unlikely to ever reach that level again within their given weight class. this would be an opportunity to regain some former glory and bring even more interest to the lower weight classes.

True but Aldo will prolly be more focusing on the 155 division in the long run. He can put on some more muscle seeing he's only 23ish. I'd see that more likely in the future while Faber has the desire to stay at 135 and Aldo doesn't. Not saying Aldo wouldnt beat Faber at 135 but Aldo wouldn't be a permanent fixture as Faber would.

Regarding the Benavidez situation if the WEC finally institutes that 125 division thats a perfect weight for Benavidez imo and would be thrown right into that championship talk. Still Faber is a great fighter and as long as he fights I'll be watching title or not.

The pressure will be on Aldo from Zuffa in the form of dollars to move up, not down. I think the interest for a title run at a smaller weight class with less stars will probably force Aldo to abandon those plans pretty quickly.

BlueSkiesBurn » Posted 6/1/08 3:18:00PM

There's no pressure from Zuffa. From all the things I've heard insiders say, and many of them say it came from Aldo's manager and camp, himself, Aldo wants to move down. Not up. The report is that he wants to win the title at 135 just to vacate it.
