Monday, 5:00 p.m. ET: In shape and focused for the first time in a while, the Takanori Gomi of old returned to us on Sunday evening's Shooto Tradition Final card, where he knocked out Shooto 154-pound world champion Takashi Nakakura late in the second round.

After the event, Sherdog.com was able to catch up with an ecstatic and jovial “Fireball Kid” to talk about his immediate feelings on the bout, as well as his next step in the sport.

Who wouldn't want to see Gomi in the UFC? (other than JJFreak ) Some if the best footwork, Great Boxing, Great Wrestling, and his Jiu Jitsu is good. It seems that he just lost his focus and his huge ego got in he way. He didn't even prepare correctly for Goleyev. He just showed up to the Fight and was like, this dude is tall, he had problems with him, lost, and along with the Kikuota fight. He knew to stay out of leglocks, he should have let Kikuota buttscoot and just tear him up. But there is nothing he can't get past because he's already proved he can be one of the best and arguably the best at one time. He showed total improvement and a new focus, sky's the limit imo.

Gomi will want money for the star he is in Japan and all the casual American fan will know him for is losing very decisively to Diaz. Doubt they'll meet in the middle unless Gomi takes much less than he can get in Japan but it'd be nice to see.

But can he still get that much money in Japan...he hadn't performed that well in his previous fights and he says MMA is losing popularity in Japan...The fact that he wants to fight internationally implies to me that he's looking for oppotunity elsewhere...if he does well in the UFC he can certainly get alot of money, especially through sponsorships.

Id love to see how Gomi matches up against the American competition. I truely believe that the competition in American is stronger!!!

I'd love to see him fighting anywhere in the US. He has lapsed recently in his training--focusing a considerable amount of his time on his own gym with younger fighters. Thus he really hasn't been pushed, or had the oppurtunity to spar with top notch training partners. If he were at a solid camp; there's no telling just how good Gomi could be.

I think he's underachieved, but he's definetely not overrated. I think he has the talent to be the #1 LW again if he takes the right steps.
