The New York State Assembly’s Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development Committee begins its session on Tuesday, and among several pieces of legislature up for vote is bill 1-11458-A, designed to regulate the sport of MMA in New York. While the bill will not be voted on before next week at the earliest, Assemblyman Bob Reilly, a democratic member of the committee who represents the 109th district of New York, opposes the legislation and recently spoke to MMAWeekly.com about his feelings on the sport and attempts to bring it to the Empire State.

WIthout getting "political", his views come off to me as very flawed and one-sided. Plus he also makes the boxing argument...and yet he's fine with the "amateur" stuff over the pro stuff when the only real difference, in boxing anyway, is they wear headgear.

imanidiot777 » Posted 1/22/08 12:25:00PM

This guy is a total IDIOT! I am SO FREAKING MAD RIGHT NOW!!

Amateur boxing is about skill but professional boxing is about injuring each other? WHATT?!!! I hope this guy doesn't watch football considering there are FAR more injuries and people DO WANT A LOT OF TIMES WANT TO KNOCK OTHER PLAYERS OUT OF THE GAME!!! Yes there are occasional bouts where fighters truly don't like each other but the majority are good sports about it at the end and if someone gets injured you always hear them saying they don't want to win that way. Most fighters would rather the opponent tap then have to damage someone like that, I stress most, not all. This guy has obviously never listened to ANY of the best fighters talk except maybe Brock Lesnar but in the end he really doesn't want to permanently injure someone either. Anderson Silva? George St. Pierre? Fedor? Forrest? Even Rashad, they are all nice guys who aren't out to kill someone in the octagon, they like to compete, just like any other sport.

This is what happens when you are a politician for too long, you lose touch with reality and become a self-indulged idiot who thinks he can run your life better than you.

The reason gambling revenues are decreasing is because PEOPLE DON'T HAVE EXTRA MONEY RIGHT NOW! I'm POSITIVE they will go back up once people have money to blow off again. This guy has no concept of economy whatsoever. How do idiots like this get elected?

By the way, I'm now hoping there is no rule against politician-bashing?

this really ridiculous, honestly they held boxing in MSG and golden gloves in NYC but they cant hold MMA -_- i hate going to NJ PA and CT to fight -_-

I think economically, it’s a very poor thing for New York State, that just the economics of it would not be beneficial to our state.-

the word for MMA to be legal in NY so they have shows here, this he really that moronic to believe that, promoters are waiting for atll bring in tons of money and especially at MSG or Nassau coliseum or anywhere in NY , Imagine UFC at the garden .... damn new yorkers aha

It would help if you had the correct party, the guy is a Democrat (notice how I didn't come up with any not-so-funny names to call someone because of party affiliation). Lets just say if you buy into the bashing of either side you here in the media, as apparently you do, you are an idiot. I reserve the right to call you an idiot because you brought political viewpoints into an MMA forum. I think the mods should delete your ignorant post.

Actually, now that I read your post more closely "Republi-Crat" sounds like a combination of the two parties, still a stupid word but overall as far as the politicians being ignorant morons, I can't disagree. (Check out my screen name, it is there for a reason)

Agreed. Some people's bigoted attitudes will never change

I guess casinos closing down wouldn't have anything to do with the global market crash leaving people with the mindset that they probably shouldn't gamble their rapidly decreasing savings for fun? Does this guy realize what's going on in the world around him? How do you draw such far removed conclusions?

Everything is closing down. The government is handing out billions of dollars to banks, automobile industries, even the porn industry is asking the government for bailouts lol. Businesses have a tendency to close down during a depression because people don't... you know... buy things.
