I will fix and input the links at some point when I have the time, Credit to CroCopKick from Sherdog for making this list.

Will keep this updated as and when it changes.

great post!

Very good job. I posted a thread on the history of Pride and UFC champions to date, it's only fitting I tag it in this thread.

dumb ?. how does a belt become vacant? is it a new weightclass?, or is it stripped for some reason?, or does the champion leave the organization? (is that what happened to bj?).

In terms of the Shooto lightweight Shooto world and pacific rim, it was due to the fighter relinquishing it.

If a fighter moves up and does not want to fight in the weightclass he is in, he will be stripped/voluntarily give the title up. Retirement is also another way titles become vacant. Contractual issues/leaving for another organisation are two big factors too.

Penn wanted to not be exclusive to the UFC, they weren't happy, so he fought elsewhere anyway, getting himself stripped in the process.

Cool list. I noticed that Cro Cop's OWGP title isn't listed.

It can happen in any number of different ways. BJ's title was vacated because of his contract dispute with the UFC. The UFC heavyweight title has been vacant a few times; Tim Sylvia lost it because he tested for steroids, Frank Mir got in a motorcycle accident. Nate Marquardt recently gave up his King of Pancrase belt so he could go after the UFC Middleweight belt.

ok, so tim and mir were idiots. i understand wanting to compete in another wclass but why would you give up your belt as opposed to competing in both classes or leaving an organization were you hold a belt (unless its small time) and why not let fighters venture out its not like their gonna put the belt up. is that a dana thing or is that normal for beltholders. cant other fighters fight here and there

Check this out. Smaller org belts get vacant has fighters leave.
TKO 170,185, 205 belts are all vacant.
Becuase GSP, David Loiseau, And Patrick Cote (in order) have left for bigger things.

so its not that big of a deal since they moved up in the world. so do those orgs just put the next too contenders together or do they have a few fights to get some kind of order in the divisions

First off, A belt becomes vacant by either a contract dispute, a fighter leaving the organization or the fighter giving up the title for other reasons like injury.

Second, when a belt becomes vacant the organization can do whatever they want to get their new title holder whether it be a single fight for quick belt holder, a tournament of the best at that weight in the organization, or keeping a vacancy until a fighter has proven they deserve a title shot then give them a title fight.

Last but not least, it is a big deal is the essense that the organization lost there best fighter at that weight but a new fighter can always be brought in and in some cases will be liked more than the previous title holder. I hope that answers your question.

thanks. i guess i have a ? for dana. there was no LW belt so he had sean & kenny fight for it. but he knew he was going to have a LW TUF. dont you guys think he could of used that as a tournament for the LW belt or are these guys gonna be another group of nonames like the first 3 TUFs.

xthe_scottx » Posted 1/28/07 9:16:00PM

Another tournament for the LW belt would've been cool. IMO It wouldn't have had the very skilled fighters that fought in the LW belt tournament when Pulver vacated the title but some good fighters could have been thrown in there and I am all for more LW fights.

Thanks for leaving out BJ Kojima.
