UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard (20-7-2 MMA, 3-3 UFC), who was submitted by arch enemy Rich Clementi last month at a UFC 79 event in Las Vegas, will be leaving the UFC to gain some experience in smaller fighter promotions before returning to the octagon.

Guillard confirmed the plans — in his trademark way (with foul language, death threats, and a denial that he’s ever really been defeated) — during a recent interview with the baltimoresun.com.

I will not cry !!

I think this is a smart move by Guillard. He needs to refine some of his skills and just settle down a little bit and he will be a much improved fighter.

Melvin Guillard: I’m Temporarily Leaving the UFC

Posted by MMA Junkie on January 9, 2008 at 11:46 am ET
UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard (20-7-2 MMA, 3-3 UFC), who was submitted by arch enemy Rich Clementi last month at a UFC 79 event in Las Vegas, will be leaving the UFC to gain some experience in smaller fighter promotions before returning to the octagon.

Guillard confirmed the plans — in his trademark way (with foul language, death threats, and a denial that he’s ever really been defeated) — during a recent interview with the baltimoresun.com.

With back-to-back losses and a recently served eight-month suspension for a failed April 2007 drug test (cocaine), Guillard said he’ll compete in some smaller, non-televised events — but not at his usual fighting weight — before he returns to the UFC. He hopes that return will happen this spring.

“I’m not going to take any fights at 155 [pounds] outside the UFC,” Guillard told the baltimoresun.com. “I want to fight at 170 [pounds] — a weight class above mine outside the UFC. I’m probably scheduled to fight again in the UFC late March, early April if they bless me with that.

“I gotta be careful who I fight for and who I fight. It’s not one of those things where I can just go fight any show or fight anybody. I gotta be real careful how I pick the fights. It’s like taking a gamble because if do that, I have to win. I have to win these fights. If I gotta fight two weight classes up — to fight 185- [pounders] — I’ll do that to protect what I have in the UFC. I’ll fight a 185-pound guy if I have to. It’s not one of those things where I can just go jump and say, “Here, I’m going to take this fight or that fight like I used to.” If something goes wrong — God forbid something goes wrong — and the UFC’s not happy, they can… put me on a break for a long time from the UFC and I can’t live with that.“

Guillard later explained that he feels he can preserve his status and ranking in the UFC’s 155-pound division even if he loses at a different weight class outside the organization. As he stated, he feels the UFC will be more forgiving if he loses to someone at a higher weight class.

In the interview, Guillard also explains that he’s still irate at Clementi and has been on the hunt to find him in their native Louisiana. He also confirmed that he instigated a fight with him nearly a year ago at an MMA event in New Orelans.

“It’s like I tell everybody — and I’m going to keep saying it — when I see him again, I’m going to fight him again,” Guillard said in the interview. “When I get ready to go home for Mardi Gras, he just knows not to be seen. I went home for New Year’s and the places he wants to go, he wasn’t even there. He knew I was going to be there looking for him. He never showed up anywhere. As long as he keeps hiding from me, running from me, I’m winning the war every day.“

Good riddance.

Hope he goes to some palooka 3rd rate show and gets his arm, leg &/or head handed to him by some 1st year jiu-jitsu student. I despise that a$$hole with a passion.

War Clementi finding him and choking him out & leaving him pantsless in an alley in "N'awlens"

christ....so much bullsh*t in his interviews.

i've come to the conclusion that guillard will never seem to learn any sort of lessons throughout life. he's got a spin on everything and rarely takes full blame for anything.

fun to watch
brutal to listen/read.

"He put his nuts on the back of my head. When I catch him, I’m going to kick him in his [expletive deleted] nuts. I can’t look at that and respect that. Because of the beef we have? Naw, I can’t. That’s honestly like me seeing him next time ... and I spit in his face. My dad always told me if a man spit on you or slapped you, [expletive deleted] kill him. And if he put his nuts on my head on national TV, I’m going to [expletive deleted] kill him, period. So, there’s no way I’m ever going to overlook that "

lovely advice.

it'll get u far in life.
make the family proud.

LOL, no kidding. The twit is so worried about "respect", yet conducts himself like he doesn't deserve any at all.

Sidenote: Last I checked, death threats were a chargable offence. Someone arrest Melvin "I got nuts on my head" Guilliard, plz. Kthxbai.

Wow Melvin is such an idiot "he was holding on for dear life." no melvin its called a choke dude. he was just winning thats what ur supposed to do. maybe u should look into the submission thing....

silverbullet » Posted 5/28/07 3:41:00PM

Melvin has huge potential, but he cannot get his act together!

IMHO Clementi was extremely disrespectful to Melvin after the fight. I am surprised that Clementi was not fined by the UFC. I remember how Babalu choked a dude out, and got the boot.

Haha, that cracked me up. Its a good move for melvin, i think hes got alot of raw talent, but his attitude is pathetic.

lmao ... this is 2 funny ... holding on for dear life ... and some how him tapping doesnt consist as win ? he thinks the world is scared 2 stand up wit him ... if he wants people 2 stand up wit him go box or something ... this is mma make them stand up wit u sprawl and brawl ... i cant help but 2 thinkthat if clemmnit had lost he wouldnt have made an excuse saying guillard was scared 2 roll wit me ... this is sad

Mattchupichu » Posted 6/22/07 6:17:00PM

I think the ufc should release Guillard from his contract. He has lost his last two fights in the first round, got busted for useing Yayo, and just stated that if he sees Clementi in person he is going to attack him outside the cage and possibly kill him. This is the type of fighter mma critics think of when they talk about ufc. A thug imbecile. GUillard has many natural talents and could have been one of the best if he would train right and get over his personal problems with some therapy. But, of course he's too macho and stupid to do that.
