James Irvin: since he hurt his knee in UFC 71 I have heard nothing about him or his health. Can anyone shed some light on his current health and contract situation? Much appreciated.

I cant shed any light, but i think he tore his ACL, that is a veryu serious injusry...when football players get it they usually miss up to a year...granted MMA fighters train and rehab more so it could be a little quicker, but dont expect him till probaly mid-late 2008

The word on the street is that he signed a 4 contract deal with the UFC and will be making his return on the December card.

ACL's Take 6-12 Months to heal. Not 2 years! A return in December is possible.

I had a total reconstruction of my ACL maybe four years ago. I can't really remember exactly how long I wasn't able to play sports for. But playing basketball or hockey with buddies is a hell of a lot different than doing pro MMA.

It takes a lot of rehab to get your knee back. You lose a lot of muscle because you have a leg brace on for like, at least a couple of months. (Depending on how serious the tear was. Like I said I had a total reconstruction.)

You also have to think that pro athletes, most likely, have some of the best sports doctors/specialists in the world.

So it would be possible for Irvin to recover, build his knee up through rehab in like 6 or seven months.

Worse summer of my life, man. Hurts like crazy.

it took me 9 months to feel almost 100% after an ACL/MCL/maniscus where the new ACL was taken from my patellar tendon and the MCL was a cadaver transplant. i was in pretty good shape, but not james irvin good, and i didnt go back to wrestling in tournaments for about 12 months after surgery, although some of that was due to me worrying a litttle too much about reinjuring it. i dont think its outside of the realm of possibility for irvin to be back in december at all.

Yeah a big part of coming off major knee surgery like that is mental. You're always going to be careful because you're subconsciously worried of reinjuring your knee.

To this day when I'm playing sports I work around my knee. When play basketball I never try to come down on just my left knee, because it's not as strong as my right and it may just give out again if I land on it wrong.

Even if you get our knee back to 100% - if that is even possible, I don't know - you're always going to be worried about hurting it again.
