'The Muscle Shark' Sean Sherk defended his UFC lightweight title for the first time at UFC 73 with a unanimous decision win over Hermes Franca. The UFC lightweight champion spoke with MMAWeekly Radio about his first title defense, his conditioning and the impending match with 'The Prodigy' BJ Penn.

Sherk is completely 1-dimensional. In his last match he could not strike with Franca if his life depended on it. He could not finish him Franca, like he could not finish Florian for 5 rounds, and Florian is not exactly a contender in LW.
Sherk is a true wrestler: shoot for TD - pin the guy down - sit on him for 5 min. Unless he learns stand-up, and submissions, he will not be a champion for long. I do not see how he could possibly defeat BJ Penn, when Penn won 5 out of 6 rounds against Hughes, and Hughes is a more dominant and heavier wrestler than Sherk.
The era of take-down and ground-and-pound domination is gone

First of all, Florian is a contender in the lightweight division. It's undeniable that Sherk has the work ethic of a robot, but he's probably the most boring fighter in the UFC. He's dominating, but he can't finish. The best part about BJ is that he'd destroy Sherk standing up, but when Sherk takes him down (which he will) he'll destroy him there too. He'll work the Rubber Guard and throw up all kinds of submissions (omaplata being one of his specialties). I can't wait to see Sherk have that belt taken away. Maybe if he'd figure out how to finish a guy he'd have more fans.

Will be a good fight. I think Sherk will be extremely hard to submit. He will definitely get his takedowns. Either he will grind out a win in his usual fashion or BJ will land a perfect hit and knock him out.
My money is on Sherk grinding it out.
