I was thinking about this because not only was there a draw last night, but there have been so many close fights in the last couple of years. A lot of these could have gone either way IMO. Griifin/Bonnar 1, Lil Nog/Shogun/ , Melendez/Kawajiri, Griffin/ Guida,Hendo/Bustamante 2 Sanchez/ Karo, Big Nog/Barnett 1&2 ,Leben/Cote, Tito/Belfort, just to name a few. On TUF they have a sudden victory round, of course there are only 2 rounds to begin with . So I was thinking make the last round go till there's finish or have all non-tile fights be more rounds. I know it would definitely favor those with good cardio, but shouldn't all fighter's do their best to be in shape anyway? The refs would really have to make sure to keep the action going, and maybe even penalize someone for stalling, like it was threatened in the Werdum/Arlovski fight. Since we don't know if Pride will be back, I will make this a UFC only discussion, but if Pride returned I would want it for both organizations. I think if the rules were changed to add knees on the ground, make the last round untimed, and the refs made the fighter's stay active more fight's would have a definitive ending. Whatcha Ya'll think?

Good post, great topic !!! .....
I think that making the last round timeless would never happen, because these fighters are so well trained and cardio'd that if fights were to go on til the end, serious conciquences on fighters health, dehydration and other health conditions would occur which could lead to a fighter getting seriously damaged. That would close this sport down, just look what happened in ufc 6 when tank fought taktarov. Emagine a fight nowadays with that impact, rounds were put in to keep politics outa the octagon.

I do think that the rounds should be scored differently so that the winner can be unanimously seen by the watching fan, as well as the judges. Too many decisions go the wrong way (tito vs griffin). If you made fighters throw down at all costs and penalised them for stalling, you wouldnt have dominant champs in this sport anymore as the win rate of a fighter would fall. I hate a boring fight, but i dont mind seeing fighters respect each other when it comes to the game of who's going to make the first mistake.

One thing im not happy about is that knees and soccer kicks are not allowed in the ufc. Dana white describes these strikes as barbarrick and no need for them to be a part of mma, but i beg to differ, pridefc rules are more exciting for the fan, the rules are more realistic as apposed to comparing the mma fight to a real fight and its also opens up more ways to win for these fighters to press the action and win more stoppages instead of decisions. Pridefc rules allowed the fighter to be able to use all strikes in any position which made the fights better to watch and made the fighters think more about their postioning on the mat.

Dana white just wants MMA to be sanctioned everywhere. Allowing those "barbarrick" strikes would make things more difficult and slow the process.

Regardless, longer rounds or more of them would help lessen the amount of decisions.

Vote: 5-five minute rounds.

Hell no

I can just see it now.. and the winner in the 52nd minute of the 3rd round by tap out due to.... the other guy being completely exhausted and just wanting to go home .....................

hell, a lot of HWs can't do 3 - 5 minute rounds without looking like they are going to die.

Not sure i get what these "close fights" are? it should be scored correctly with each round treated the same, this thing would be good for draws but they so rarely happen i dont worry about it, but i cant think of any examples where this could have been used, those fights mentioned were close but they could be and were given to the winner as deemed by the judges.

Making the 3rd rd neverending doesnt make sense to me cos they couldnt schedule the other main card fights, its unworkable but a nice idea, in the end this is what god invented rematches for

I would agree with an extra round but definitely not an unlimited round. =\

But that only works if its a DRAW after 3 rounds, which only ever happens through foul points or maybe a 10-10 round

Also seeing as the judging is so retarded sometimes i think giving them more leeway to score 10-10 rounds would only make things worse tbh

I vote yes, but I knew the numbers would be way off. This isn't an idea most approve of.

A poll question for those who never watched the original UFC events... -.-
There's a reason they changed it.

They quickly realized that not every fight is finishable, and that noone wants to watch 2 tired fighters lay on eachother for 30mins till one of them just gives up.

I use to rent the old UFC events as a kid on VHS, I spent ALOT of time hitting the FF button.
