Ben Askren is one of the best fighters in the world. And we may never get to see him match up with his elite peers.

The ONE Championship welterweight champ said he will likely retire at the end of his current contract, which has six fights remaining. Askren will defend his belt against Nikolay Aleksakhin in the main event of ONE: Global Rivals on Friday in the Philippines.

"I've got six fights left with ONE," Askren told MMA Fighting. "Then I told them, it's not a guarantee I'll be done, but I think there's a high likelihood that after those six fights I'll be calling it a day."

Who knows, it's like trying to predict next years weather to comment on this today.

I imagine he is pretty happy with his compensation. Sounds like he gets paid as good as most UFC champions to work and he doesn't have the choker of zuffa policy holding back his earning potential outside of fighting. He could build stability to turn towards other ventures outside of fighting, I read this week how Tim Kennedy said he wants to fight because he loves it but it is the least profitable venture he has to go on and why the UFC not calling him for a year and a half isn't so bad for him. Ben is talented enough to have clients learn from him by buying training where he too could be stable outside of fighting I imagine. It's too bad he is bogged down by what ifs because of the circumstances regarding UFC ducking him. He'll not get just recognition for very much among zombies about what he does or how he does it in MMA or wrestling.

I highly doubt he is making anything even in the ballpark of what a ufc champion is getting. He started at 50k/50k with an incentive that grows his purse with each win. Even going undefeated it's a stretch that he's doubled his starting salary which is what the lowest paid ufc champion gets.

Even his sponsor pay is likely less than the 40k a ufc champion gets from reebok.

In fairness though, one fc was willing to pay him that well right out of the gate and the ufc stupidly low balled him. He would also have to take a huge hit in sponsor pay if he wasn't a title holder.

I really hope we can see Ben fight In the UFC. Be a real shame to see such talent never be able to be put on display in the UFC. Hope Ben and Dana can just make up and move past it.

The only way he makes more than a UFC Champ would have to be through outside of fighting. I don't think he cares about it too much because he makes enough to live comfortably and in doing so he is taking a stance on something he feels obviously strongly about. He could of, should have, would have been...

His first one FC fight was a guaranteed six figure payday with out getting into his sponsorship in the US or the deals he's part of in Asia. Some champs don't have that today. It took DJ five title wins to get in that range. Ben gets paid like he should and like a lot of other great fighters deserve to but don't. His eyes have been on opening multiple Askren wrestling academy's and on being a coach at Roufusport ever since One FC gave him financial stability, he's been talking about it since the day he signed with them and how it's a reality to aim towards now.

If the guy has no desire to find out how good he really is then by all means let him retire. In his shoes I'd rather fights scrubs in Rizen for 6 figures than fight the killers in the UFC.

He did want to fight in the UFC, he said so many times, he said it on MMA new shows and podcasts. He told Dana he would fight the champ, Rory or another top 5 WW and he would do it for free if he lost. He met with Zuffa in Vegas where no dollar amounts were ever even discussed and was told "not interested".

I don't think anyone's 100% clear on why Ben isn't in the UFC, but I have to believe at least part of the blame lies with him. You can't constantly talk trash about the company you want to work for, and I'd wager that if he played ball and kissed some ass he'd be in the UFC in no time.
