With Anthony Pettis scheduled to coach against Gilbert Melendez on an upcoming edition of “The Ultimate Fighter,” UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo has turned his focus away from a Pettis super-fight and back to his own division.

“I was thinking about facing pettis, because it was a fight that everybody wanted to see, including he and I, the fans and the organization. Unfortunately, it cannot happen,” Aldo said. “So, I’m focused again on my division and I think I should face Chad Mendes. He’s a guy I’ve already fought, but I must respect him..."

Aldo, you're great. I can't wait to see you face Mendes or Pettis.

Yeah it's pretty baller when a champ doesn't bitch about a rematch and instead asks for it. Mendez is easily his toughest competition at fw and he basically asks for it

I didn't think I could cling any tighter to Aldos sack, but I but now it's no problem!
Love it when fighters pick the hard fight

Put this on ufc 173 main event
They already fought. They don't need a ten week camp to prepare

Mendes never really stopped being the UFCs #1 FW contender after he lost to Aldo the first time. No one in that division has come close to having that designation since their first fight. So, sense is being made here.

While I'm ok with Mendes getting the next shot, I think Cub would have something to say about that.

He should, but I personally didn't rank Swanson higher as a contender after Mendes lost to Aldo (Swanson lost to Llamas at the same time period) nor has Cub surpassed Mendes in his five fight streak since simply because Mendes is also on a five fight win streak in the exact same time period matching Cubs KO output against an very comparable lineup of guys imo. It's close though, but I don't think Cub has eclipsed Mendes in this title picture.
