Melvin Guillard's almost nine-year UFC run has come to an end.

"The Young Assassin" was released from the UFC Thursday night, according to his manager Malki Kawa. The decision comes after the 30-year-old lost a unanimous decision to Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 38 in London earlier this month.

Guillard (31-13-2, 2 NC) debuted on second season of "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2005. Despite losing early in the tournament, Guillard defeated Marcus Davis via second-round TKO in the Finale to secure a spot in the organization. The lightweight fighter went 12-9 inside the Octagon, with notable wins against Dennis Siver, Gleison Tibau, Evan Dunham and Mac Danzig.

This really surprises me as he still has his talent, but I suppose he was 2-5-1 in recent fights.

I think should Ross have not have pulled out in that early it may have saved Guillards career.

Very surprising but probably for the best in Melvin's case. WSOF and Bellator would love to have him on their roster.

Damn, can't say I'm a fan of this cut. Really he won that fight against Ross, and he doesn't have 3 losses in a row. Not a ton of other guys at LW swing for the fences (despite his last fight)

The poor performance against Johnson is what hurt him. He didn't look like the same Guillard.

He'll land on his feet pretty easily so I don't think it's a problem for him.

Not the first time the UFC has let Guillard go.

I think Melvin will put together a few wins and be right back.

I see this as being a "motivation" release!
Once he wins a few in a row, he will be right back, just like Rumble!

Yep, I was coming here to say the same. To me it's surprising since Guillard's been with the UFC for so long, but it's not surprising given his recent inconsistency and lack of fire. It's not a Bobby Voelker stepping up on short notice, refusing to quit when most would tap - it's a supremely talented athlete fighting lower than his potential, over and over.

Guillard will likely end up in a 2nd tier promotion, but I don't know if he'll make it back. Lighter fighters age faster because their divisions are more about speed, and that's the first thing to go. I don't think Guillard's lost a step yet, but I do think he's lost motivation, and I'm not confident that he'll get that back in time both to get back on the UFC brass's good side and to make another serious run at the LW title.

Sorta surprising but not shocked. He'll be back after a few ko wins

I guess Melvin can see into the future. He said he was done with Ross Person and moving on prior to the Johnson fight. I guess he was more serious and literal than people thought.

On a serious note though, the cut isnt as surprising when you look at it. He will never be more then a gatekeeper, he was been in the UFC for a long time - so he was making a lot more then the equivalent talent level fighter, he was inconsistent and had a boring fight. Add in his out of the octagon issues and it makes a little more sense.

Guys like Guillard, Matt Brown, Erick Silva, etc will always be 50/50 fighters. They'll annihilate the lower level guys but fall to better talent because of their defensive flaws.

This really sucks. I'm a huge fan and I do believe he was released prematurely but I guess this opens a door to see him wreck the lower level guys in other orgs.
I'm sure he can make it back to the UFC someday, the best chance for that imo is to sign with WSOF, which I am hoping he does. Will always be a fan, I definitely believe he can still perform at the top level! WAR YOUNG ASSASIN
