Undefeated Welterweight Is Now Unrestricted Free Agent

Former Bellator Welterweight Champion and undefeated mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Ben Askren is a free man.

The Viacom-owned promotion has said goodbye to the "Funky" wrestler after failing to come to terms on a new deal, which essentially clears the path for Askren to sign with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), no strings attached.

From Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney:

"I've said it many times, Ben's a completely one-dimensional fighter who is utterly dominant in that dimension. I had a number of discussions with Ben and it became clear it was time for both parties to move in different directions. We've relinquished any right to match here and Ben can sign with whoever he chooses to sign with. Ben's been at Bellator since the start of his career, I respect him and what he's accomplished and wish him the best wherever he goes."

I'd like to see him give Shields a taste of his own LnP medicine.

I get the feeling they just don;t like doing business with Ben in general, even if he is a great fighter. Them doing this gives Ben freedom, but I think it also means a much smaller payday for Askren in the end.

Ultimately, I think it is a decent PR move by BFC not to go into a bidding war with the UFC over this fighter, Ben is not worth the headache in the big picture imo.

I totally agree. BFC needs to keep their fights interesting. The UFC can experiment with dominant wrestlers when they have so many other fights on a card that people want to see.

I think he will, I think he could also thank BFC because the price tag just went way down.

If Hendricks loses to GSP, I would have him welcome Askren into the UFC. I'm not sure how many times the two met in wrestling, but I know Hendricks beat Askren at least once, if not twice, in high school. I think they wrestled at different weight classes in college. This could be a start of reigniting an old, but good rivalry.

Dana has already come out and said he doesnt want to sign him, but take that with a grain of salt. f he does get into the UFC though, I disagree with the people that think he should get an immediate title shot. Just because your champion in Bellator does not allow you to jump the line, especially when he hasn't beaten anyone in the top 10 IMO. Give him someone in the bottom of the top 10 to see where he stacks up, and then see from there.

Dana's statement about not taking Askren is retarded!
