UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis believes that the bout between Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez was definitely exciting, but he has 'too much skill and talent' to brawl like that.

u wanna take as less damage as u can in a match..u'll fight longer and have a better career..like they say the battle is won in the gym not the cage..and if u have a war with a hard training camp..wear and tears..

"Too intelligent, too skilled, too humble..."

On a serious note though, I think Melendez is just as skilled. But with a guy like Diego, who just has insane drive and heart, its hard not to get dragged into a brawl.

I actually agree with Pettis, even if he sounds as arrogant as usual. I loved Diego vs Melendez but it wasn't what MMA is ALL about. Sure it's fun to watch but I like when fighters show the finer points of the sport and are more evenly matched.

Personally I still have Jones Vs Gustafson fight of the year, that wasn't rock'em sock 'em robots. It was a highly skilled contest between evenly matched foes that required both parties showing a ton of heart. Most people prefer the Sanchez vs Melendez fight however which is cool to.

Pettis will get his shot at Melendez sooner or later.

I like how Pettis fights
I know he would not get into a dog fight like that.

There is nothing wrong with anything Pettis said. However, the fact is that brawls sell the sport to many people, so they also have their place. Some of the best fighters have been brawlers. I would say Fedor was a brawler. Dan Henderson is a brawler. Being a brawler in MMA doesn't mean a guy isn't skilled. Clearly Melendez and Sanchez are skilled. I understand where Pettis is coming from, and I respect his point. Although he might not brawl, he is still going for the KO. So at least he isn't just playing defense to win decisions.

Exactly.

Even if he isn't brawling, Pettis is always exciting.

I feel like if GSP said this I'd throw stones (and I'm a GSP fan) but Pettis has never been in a boring fight so I think it's a fair point. It's also a huge dig at a future contender in Melendez because that guy is tremendously skilled but like you all have said got drug into a war. Pettis is going to be hard to beat right now, but I'm thinking a guy with a little length and some great wrestling and jits defense is the one to do it. Not sure who the best guy that fits that description is right now at lw.

Diego just has a knack for dragging people into wars. If Pettis fought him Diego would have made him brawl too.

Melendez is taking his title anyway.
