UFC president Dana White says that when T.J. Grant returns from concussion he may not be fighting for the UFC lightweight title.

It was an amazing fight but I wasn't super impressed with Melendez performance. I think showtime will drop Melendez if he lands as many switch nines as Samchez did.

If Grant needs a tuneup fight and Gil just made a lot of new fans after basically flipping a coin with Benson for the decision and a different stylistic opportunity exists now, why not Pettis vs Melendez and Grant vs Sanchez. A winnable fight for TJ and opportunity to look better than Gil against the same opponent. I haven't been following how long TJ is even sidelined though(?). If he's already healthy now, I don't know that he should be skipped. But he has pulled out of two fights since earning his shot, not just once.

I think TJ steam rolls the Melendez that fought last night.

I think TJ will be back in time to fight, especially with Pettis fighting Thompson. Now the question I pose is not are you impressed with the fight but if you were impressed with Melendez enough to think he bypasses Grant. I think not.

Grant earned his way there, losing it due to a concussion (conspiracies aside) should not have him fall out of the #1 contender spot. Even though Melendez should be the current LW champion, Grant has earned his spot. Getting passed over twice is already a kick in the balls, this would just be devastating

iirc Grant was looking to fight Pettis around March from an interview I heard a month ago or so. He was planning to start contact drills in November.

I personally don't think its a tragedy Grant gets skipped, he pulled out of 2 chances. Cant expect the ufc to automatically install him into a title fight when he's healthy, especially since he's not even a big draw. If they give Gilbert an automatic title shot then I have beef, but I think the ufc will match up Gilbert & Grant for #1 contender in February or March. I wanted to see Glibert vs Khabib but him vs t.j works; I say Bendo vs Nurgumadev would also work.

All good points, it sucks for TJ though, but Gil is just more marketable

This all depends on how long Grant will be out. If Grant does not have a determined date of return, then definitely set it up for Melendez.

Don't sleep on Thompson, it might be Melendez vs. Thompson or Grant vs. Thompson.

You know how much UFC loves rematches. We may end up seeing another 3 fights between Gil and Josh.

I feel bad for TJ but I like Josh and Gil better. I'd give Josh the next shot and do Gil vs TJ if I called the shots

Gil vs Bendo was a split also, so Gil shouldn't be far away from another shot

It's really about how impressed the non-hardcore fans are. They don't try to appeal to the 100k people buying every event, it's the million people on the fence about ordering each PPV, and to them Gil's fight against Diego was more impressive than any of TJ's fights. Just tellin it like it is from the UFC's view. It costs a significant amount of time and money over months to promote a challenger in an upcoming title fight, they've started the process with TJ twice so his ROI is in the negative financially for the promotion since his last fight. Until he shows he can make it for a scheduled fight, it's hard to go full bore on starting the marketing machine months ahead of a title fight with his recent medical issues pulling him out after they'd already started sinking $ into promoting both fights he had to pull out of. RDA/Khabib/Diego are all ready and opponent-less for Gil/Benson/TJ. If TJ doesn't take another fight before a title shot (if he still gets it), he'd be fighting after a year on the shelf and multiple injury pull-outs. Not a recipe for success imo.
