The UFC has released perennial Japanese contender Yushin Okami (29-8 MMA, 13-5 UFC).

MMAjunkie.com today confirmed the company's decision with UFC officials.

Okami's UFC run lasted more than seven years, and included four separate winning streaks of at least three fights. A top-ranked fighter throughout his tenure in the promotion, UFC President Dana White once labeled Okami as "the best fighter to ever come out of Japan."

This is craziness in my opinion.

Yushin is one of the best MWs in the world and has been for along time now.

Okami should go dominate wherever signs him. Bellator or WSOF he'd be the champ in no time, IMO.

As far as Okami getting cut that's just crazy. He went from #4 to done just that quick.

This. He's gotten a bit chinny but he still has a lot left in him.

He had a 3 fight win streak prior to losing to IMO #4 Jacare, was still was in the top 10, and at $42k show $42k to win wasn't overpaid. The only justification is that he isn't the most exciting fighter proving the UFC is more about entertainment then this being a legitimate sport.

I still believe he is the greatest Japanese fighter of all time on account that he ACTUALLY won meaningful fights in the states, ill credit with Sakuraba as the most influential thoigh.

Sucks to see him get the boot, this one hits home more for me then when Fitch got let go. He's won 3 of 4 over 2 really good fighters (Belcher & Lombard). Atleast Fitch was in a funk, this is my main beef with mma.I get that its a business but sometimes the best in the world get caught between the cross fire of excitment & being successful. Its a fine line & unfortunately for Thunder he got the short end of the stick.

He will beat Shlemnko for Bellators middleweight strap though, Just watch

Clearly I'm in the minority but I'm not unhappy about this cut.

I wanted nothing more to do with him after the Belcher fight where he managed to be boring even while in full mount.

I'm very surprised by this news, this is as weird as when Jon Fitch, Rich Clementi, and Luigi Fioravanti were cut.

I'm pretty shocked by this and don't like the move, but it cements that being exciting > everything else. I wonder what Chael's going to have to say about this, that's his buddy.

This is silly. It's gotta be due to the fact that he has a grinding kind of style that's less appealing or entertaining to some viewers... Similiar to what happened to fitch.

I have to agree with you Okami finished 5 of his 13 UFC wins. I think the issue with both Fitch and Okami is they ask for more money than they are worth. In Silva's last 6 fight's he averaged 589,000 PPV buys. The one with Okami scored a mere 325,000 meaning fans cared more about seeing Ortiz/Griffin II and Jackson vs Jardine than they did about the greatest P4P fighter.

Yushin Okami is currently getting paid 42k to show 42k to win.
He's getting paid more than Nate Diaz, more than Joesph Benavidez, and almost as much as Rousey (45/45).

If you're getting paid that much there has to be reasons, and beating Buddy Roberts and being in close dull contests such as the fights with Lombard and Belcher really don't warrant that. What probably happened was Dana gave him a choice of a significant pay cut or to quit, he probably thought better of himself and packed his bags.

Looking at other fighters pay I would not be surprised to see Ben Rothwell and Tyron Woodley on that chopping block with a loss in there future.
