MMA fighter Leandro "Feijao" Souza (1-1), a member of Nova Uniao and Delfim Cacadores, died on Thursday while cutting weight for Friday's Shoot Brazil 43 card in Rio de Janeiro. The 26-year-old fighter, who was slated to fight Gabriel Brasil (1-1) in flyweight action, was cutting the final two pounds for the official weigh-ins when he passed out, and his death was confirmed moments later.

never heard of a weight cut being this bad before.

If I am reading the right sherdog profile he usually fights at middleweight so a cut to flyweight seems too crazy to be true.

Hate hearing about this stuff in MMA as seldom as it does happen. Thought and prayers go out to his family :'(

There needs to be a limit on how much you can cut. I know that would be tough but someone needs to save these guys from themselves

Especially if the profile that DD15 mentioned had him fighting at Middleweight. There's no way a fighter should be cutting 1/3 of his body weight.

I think Tibau cuts around 1/4 but even that is freakish.

This is why I don't like seeing fighters cutting insane amounts of weight. It's doing more harm to your body than good. Perfect example is George Roop. I don't care what anyone says that dude isn't healthy.

when I hear fighters making such weight cuts, it makes me feel like I'd have to fight at 85 lbs to be competitive...that's 85...not 185

Distillers water is essential during a big weight cut. Seems like he was severely dehydrated and died. Brain probably wasn't getting oxygen

Middleweight to Flyweight? Really? Wow. That would explain it right there. It says he was 2 pounds away from making weight too. I can't imagine how he must have looked or what he put his body through to do that. There comes a point when cutting more weight will hurt you more than help you. I hope other fighters will learn from this man's mistake and we never see this happen again. An advantage like that isn't worth risking your life over.

This just goes to show how messed up it is in Brazil. There's not a whole lot of opportunities for many people. This guy died while trying to put food on the table for his family and similar incidents like this are happening everyday throughout the world.

People are dying during weight cuts everyday? Why aren't we hearing about them all?

LOL - I'm talking about the idea of trying to feed one's family has put many lives in danger.

This is horrible, but I have to say, when does the responsibility fall on the individual and to a lesser stance the fighter's trainer/coaches, manager, teammates, family and friends.

This is a potential solution. Only issue is how to limit the cut. Would weight cut allowances be given on a fighter to fighter basis, or would say Bantamweights be allowed to cut 7.5 pounds while a Welterweight could cut 15?

The issue may have been that he didn't know how to cut weight and no one helped him, or he was too stubborn. If you don't eat or drink the right stuff beforehand, you can do yourself in trying to lose every little weight, as it's all coming out of the wrong places.
