Brazilian welterweight Demian Maia was supposed to be fighting on this weekend’s UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie fight card in Rio de Janeiro, but had the fight yanked out from under him when Josh Koscheck withdrew due to injury.

Although Maia was pulled from the fight card altogether, he already has another opponent lined up.

Maia will next face Jake Shields, according to a report on UFC Tonight on Tuesday night.

I was hoping Pierce and Shields would fight and Maia would get Rory. I think Maia is a much better version of Shields and should win the fight everywhere.

This is a great fight, with a worthwhile outcome -

1) If Shields wins, it shows that his combination of grappling acumen and pure toughness can set him above even the best BJJ practitioners in the world.

2) If Maia wins, it gives him another win over a name at 170, justifying another top guy on the way to a possible title shot.

The Fitch fight showed that it's possible to neutralize Maia's constrictor-like ground attack, but it comes at the heavy cost of no return attack. Jake may be in for a long night - or he may have the best win of his UFC career.

For my money, I'm picking Maia due to his momentum, and because we haven't seen much of Jake's guard game recently.

Maia should school Jake. His striking is better because Jake's plain sucks, and no way Jake out grapples Maia. If Maia wins he should get the next title shot!!!

I agree that Maia should be able to win standing or on the ground. I don't think he blows Shields away, but I think he wins the majority of the fight on his way to a UD.

I'm rooting for him. It's tough to come up with credible opponents for GSP and Maia may be one with a chance. He might be the only 170er that can handle GSP in top control and either put him in sub danger or force the fight to remain standing (unfortunately for him, it will still be GSP's choice where the fight ends up). Plus, unlike Shields, it would be a matchup we haven't seen yet.

I think they are givin Jake the Fitch special. 4 of his last 5 fights were boring. I see a Maia UD and Jake getting his walking papers.

you guys are all trippin.Jakes got a better take down defense and take downs. And Jake will be able to hang with him anywhere in the grappling game. And let's not forget Jake went five rounds with GSP standing and GSP started to run in the 5th. And what happend when he fought Woodley I thought all of you were saying he was supposed to get knocked out but nope he wins the fight standing. I'm not saying Jake wins the fight easily maia has been looking really good lately but I think this is a great match up.

I think stylistically this is a great match up, neither has any stand up repertoire to write home about and both have the grappling that makes them stand out way above the rest...just hope it doesn't turn into a point stand up battle. I was kind of hoping Maia would get Rory as well and think that fight does more for the division right now but this will be better than making them just sit on the sidelines staring at each other.

I believe you are the one who be trippin. Jake lost the standup portion of bully beatdown. I repeat bully beatdown. Jake failed to knockdown a stuntman on bully beatdown.

I await your retort fine sir.
