I agree, Sonnen was able to walk out of the cage on his own power.

This is also a bit misleading, because he has admitted that Jon Jones beat his ass, whether it was stopped early or not.

He was about 20 seconds away from being a champion and the end of the round but if the fight was any longer he would have been about 30 seconds away from being unconscious..

While this is true and it is most certainly true of Chael. I think he has a point. He was intelligently defending himself and there was very little time left on the clock.

There are also plenty of examples of fighters in much worse shape than Chael who have come back to win. Brock's fight with Carwin in particular comes to mind. If nothing else I would like to see more consistency from refs.

The Ref has no understanding of time until the 10 second sticks. Time on the clock never trumps fighter safety, not that Chael was in grave danger. I agree consistency of the refs is a issue. Even if its just consistency within themselves.

there are at least 2 giant screens in the arena with the time clock. It doesn't take much to glance for half a second to see the time left. If a fighter who has to dodge a punch to the face can do it, a ref certainly can

There is a 10 second block signal and a round ending horn. They are the audible cues for the ref to know the time in the round and the only cue he should need to know so that his attention is firmly focused where it should be, on the combatants engaged in the contest.
