Light heavyweight Phil Davis (11-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) could get a chance to cut back in line for No. 1 contender if he gets past his next challenge.

Sources close to the fight on Monday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the 28-year-old fighter is set to meet ex-champ Lyoto Machida (19-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) at UFC 163, which takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian website Portal do Vale Tudo first reported the fight on Monday.

Yes about the worst match up for Davis. TBH we say that alot about Machida though.

Machida is a very bad match-up for Davis IMO, i reckon he KO's Davis inside two rounds. I guess that leaves Gustafsson to face Jones once he heals up.

I dare say I would still put Machida at #2 at LHW. Dude is an assassin. He finishes fights (Couture, Evans, Bader, Thiago Silva & more).

That being said I could see Davis potentially giving Machida problems. Davis withstood a five round, monster ass beating courtesy of Rashad Evans, so I think he may be able to hang for three with Machida. If he can make it ugly he has a chance. Realistically though, I think Machida should dominate. Wouldn't at all be surprised at a T/KO.

Yeah we do, but based on his win/loss ratio, we're right more often than not. I remember thinking that about his fight with Jon Jones. I was 100% correct for one round.
Still, Machida has shown it time and time again, he, like Liddell before him, is a god awful match up for wrestlers/grapplers. He has great TDD and he's almost never in a position where they can get their hands on him and wrap him up. I'd pick Machida by either 2nd or 3rd rnd KO or decision. That said, this would be a monstrous opportunity for Phil Davis. It would show a massive improvement in his game and skill level if he can beat Machida, and it would not only prove that he is capable of beating a top 10 opponent, but the high level guys at or around the top 5. I can't remember whether or not Lil Nog was ranked inside of the top 10 at the time they fought. The way I see it, if Machida wins he is probably next in line after Gustaffson. If Davis wins he is probably going to have to beat someone like maybe the Evans/Henderson winner, Mousasi, or Texeira to earn himself a shot.

Lyoto takes it easy IMO. Davis isnt even at the same level as guys like Machida, Shogun, Evans, Jones and other top tier LHW.

Hoping this doesn't wind up becoming the sequel to Rashad vs Lil Nog...

Davis' striking looked much improved last time, Joe. That being said, I fear a "Machida via 'elusiveness'" decision.

Two boring fighters announced to replace two exciting fighters all in one day (chael not really official yet). . Should we be excited? Well lets just hope we can see an exciting KO by Lyoto at some point in the fight.

Hate to mess with you all but out of his last seven fights over 3 years dude has only been to decision three tkmes and lost two...Rua and Page...so he has only elusively decisioned one guy in over three years (Hendo).

Machida is going to make Davis wish he never signed the contract.

Machida has been taken down by Jones, but has problly improved his tdd and choke defense (tdd was great already) since than,

I expect this fight to be a relaxed pace Machida sets, and Davis won't get a takedown, problly cuz he won't attempt them like against Rashad.
