Very bitter. They always claim that they treat the fighters so well. Yeah, they treat the top five percent of the fighters well – the ones that are on the main card all the time. They don’t treat the rest of them very well. The healthcare plan is horrible, with a $1,500 deductible per injury – the catastrophic-injury insurance is not even really good insurance. There’s no retirement fund, there’s no signing bonus. You start off at six-and-six, you’re really not making too much money because you’re self-employed, so you’re paying the self-employment tax and you’re paying the regular tax and income tax. So you’re paying twice as much in tax.

Serious sour grapes there in that interview. He's complaining about money and politics, but it was him running his mouth ABOUT politics that cost him his day job. He's also a chiropractor on the side, and I'm sure makes bank with that occupation.

Also, if you look at just his disclosed pay, it's significantly higher than the numbers he gave, which mean's he's talking take home. How you can fight twice in a year and complain about $45,000 in your pocket is beyond me.

It's hard to take a chiropractor that threatened to beat up Obama, nicknamed Christmas, seriously.

I thought Cholish made some good points in regards to fighters not being treated fairly but anyone that works for a big corporation is probably not getting paid in proportion to the huge profits the company is making. Facts of life.

I also find the complaint of "only the top guys are treated right" a bit odd. Obviously the best guys will be treated well, because they draw the most money. If you don't like it, either work elsewhere or become one of those top guys. Hell, GSP has a more boring style than Volkmann.

I just find this complaint remarkably ironic.
As far as money goes, this interview also has good information. This was posted a while ago but seems relevant.

So Roops has $20k in sponsors and Volkmann has $2,000? Maybe Volkmann should hire a manager, which apparently pays for itself pretty easily.

So if the UFC pays you 6+6 and they're the top echelon. Where else can guys like Volkman go to get a better pay than that ? Wild Bills Backyard MMA Jamboree in Nebraska may pay a guy like Volkman that much to headline a card because of his name being a UFC fighter. But most regional smaller org's held at your local fire hall isn't going to match 6+6 for their under-card guys.

Not sure how Bellators pay scale is but i'm sure it's equal or less than the UFC.

I think Volkmann is forgetting any job you have, they have tiers of pay. Top guys, execs so to speak or top salesmen etc get better pay. Newcomers make dishwasher level to GSP's Exec Chef money

Don't worry Jacob you're about to see what having no insurance, healthcare plan and earning significantly less is all about.

Given Josh Barnett's history, I said the same thing about him. Look how that turned out.

Barnett has been a relevant HW for basically his entire career and a former UFC champ.

His resume shits on that of Volkman.

It's all in the game, People will pay and care to see Barnett while Volkman was relatively boring and was never much threat to be a top flight guy.

Jacob Volkmann is not Josh Barnett.
