JARAGUA DO SUL, Brazil – After a three-fight stint in the UFC, lightweight John Cholish said he will retire following his loss to Gleison Tibau. But he also told MMAjunkie.com he believes lower-level fighters need better compensation.

The unfortunate inequity of the fight business.

This is just sad. I was defending the UFC a while ago when it came to fighter pay, hell, its still more than a undercard fighter would earn on a huge boxing card, but MMA and the UFC in particular are mainstream now.
This is a top 20 guy speaking to one of the biggest media outlets for MMA saying I won't break even while fighting in the UFC! Thats just fucking embarrassing.
Its gotten to the point now where they can afford to say free health care and minimum fight contract of $15,000 show $15,000 win!

They are on one of the biggest tv networks in the world, they pull in PPV figures that constantly out perform any other PPV event and they have pretty much every aspect of the advertisement and endorsement market sewn up!

Pay it forward you heartless motherf*ckers!

I agree about fighter pay. I am getting sick of these guys announcing their retirements like it's a big deal. No one on this guy's level in the boxing world would make some announcement about quitting the sport.

Ufc makes enough money as is. They need to pay more
Only thing is we the fans will be the ones paying for it when ppv rates increase and tickets to events increase
Eventuallly we will have to pay for autograph sessions as well

I strongly disagree.

How many people said to you "I'm only tuning in to see John Cholish fight." No one I'm sure. Undercard guys don't sell event, but if they put on an amazing performance, they can snatch up things like FOTN, SOTN, KOTN and locker room bonuses.

I'd say the hardest workers and best entertainers are paid just fine, and those aren't the guys who bitch about their compensation.

Cholish is not a top 20 guy, come on.

Maybe you misread it and think Tibau said he was underpaid.

and another thing, Cholish is probably outside of the top 50 in the world in one of 8 weight classes. The equivalent boxing guy would be maybe the 25th-30th ranked guy in one of their 16 or so weight classes.

I'm quite sure the 25th ranked super middlelightweight boxer doesn't make a lot of money and probably would retire if they had a Wall St job to fall back on.

So yeah, 8 grand is pretty low for a bottom end guy but it's not the crime of the century.

It's also 8 grand and free health care for only 3 months of training and 15 minutes of fighting.

A guy who like Cholish who does mma part time should not complain about pay because he's not putting everything he's got into it. You've got to dedicate your life to the sport if your going to make the big bucks. If you listen to most mma success stories you hear about a guy who packed whatever they had and moved halfway across the country to achieve their goal to become a mma star. A great amount of dedication is needed if your going to be successful in any sport, especially one where you get punched in the face.

I agree that I don't tune in for him but there needs to be a fighter minimum pay MORE the $4,000/$4,000

He should maybe worry about being a better fighter than wanting more money for being a shitty fighter!

I think the bonus side is great! It helps motivate fighters and can be up to 10x the amount a fighter gets paid so thats one hell driving force. But the UFC is basically MMA to 99% of the world.
Its not boxing there aren't countless promoters trying to squeeze every ounce of profit out of guys desperate to fight for a title and willing to fight for next to nothing to get there.
Right now theres basically the UFC and feeder orgs so if they are the cream of the crop then why not have a worth while base rate of pay?
Dana has been pretty vocal about how he doesn't want to be compared to boxing and yet he's treating the undercard guys dangerously close to the sport they don't want to be compared to.
They are releasing stats saying they are breaking PPV records, they've just signed with FOX and have just become one of the first YouTube PPV channels so if the profits are as sky high as they say why are guys fighting at a loss or to break even?

I love that they do FOTN, SOTN, KOTN and locker room bonuses, but thats still only a small percentage of fighters getting them. I guess I just don't want the UFC to end up like boxing where guys quit before they get to earn any real money and the sport stagnates.
