Despite there being no way get home again, thousands have rushed to sign themselves up to Mars One.

The highly ambitious project aims to send humans to live on Mars by 2022, despite the fact that NASA's plans won't see a manned mission to the Red Planet until at least the 2030s. Mars One aims to solve the problem of a difficult return mission by simply not offering a way for the astronauts to return at all, a decision that will mean that those who have signed up may be committing themselves to a suicide mission. By the time applicants close on August 31st the company is expecting as many as 500,000 sign-ups.

"Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria for selection," said Mars One chief medical director Norbert Kraft. "Now, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut works and lives with the others–and for a lifetime of challenges ahead."

So no return trips for at least 10-20 years after this first batch gets sent up there as guinea pigs. I'm sure they'll forget something important for survival. Unbreathable air, -58 degree average temperature. Are they really going to arrive there with enough air, water, food, and ways to stay warm to last a decade or two? It sounds like expensive euthanasia. I'm all for it.

Stupid idea. Pretty much signing up to be put to death. No human will ever be able to live on Mars.

It's no longer a question of if but rather when. In theory its harder to live in a space station than it is live in a sustainable base on a planet.
Most research aimed at sustainable living on planets other than Earth is spent trying to cultivate algae. The algae would be used to create oxygen within the base and with it only requiring naturally occurring minerals to survive, harvesting these from the planet wouldn't be that much different from harvesting them from here. When this is figured out sustainable life on Mars or anyother planet within reach is easily done.

I'd bank on a perminant base ocupied full time being established on Mars within my lifetime.

Sounds like a boring tedious life struggling to survive daily without the threat of Zombies.

I'll bet this first settlement will be rife with suicides. Reality will settle in after the first week of 'wow, this is so cool'.

These test subjects will go nuts after a few months. Wake up, eat, run tests on dirt, send results back to earth, play board games and repeat the same thing again tomorrow. This sounds a lot like a mental institution. Who in their right mind would volunteer for such a thing? I take that back. I volunteered for the Navy which stands for Never Again Volunteer Yourself.
