Remember when Chuck Liddell knocked out Renato Sobral with a head kick back in 2002?

That set off a string of winning performances where "The Iceman" was able to win nine straight mixed martial arts (MMA) fights by way of knockout or technical knockout, making him one of the most popular fighters in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Right when MMA experienced its boom in popularity.

That's something the now-retired Liddell wants to see more of from this generation of fighters. And he's not just a UFC Hall-of-Famer calling shots from his couch, he's the promotion's new Vice President of Business Development and he wants to develop a more exciting product.

From his conversation with U-T San Diego:

"I'd really have to talk to the guys to see if that's really what they're doing. I see it like guys are trying a lot more to just get their win so they can get their next fight. When we were doing it, it was a lot more about just going out and fighting. I hate hearing in a UFC corner ‘you won the first four rounds, just stay away from him this round.' The guy doesn't have a knockout punch, hasn't taken you down the whole fight, why do you have to go be afraid of him? Go out and win! Make it exciting, go knock him out, finish the fight."

Liddell has a point.

I agree with Chuck but I understand why the fighters are going for safe wins (its their career after all).

I'd be so much better if guys just went out there and fought rather than devising some strategy to win on points. Condit against Diaz and Clay Guida against everyone comes to mind.

This is one of the problems with having rounds though.

Wish they have cards out like the pride days for stalling and not wanting to fight. Dock their purses we will see them fight

There are certain fighters that come out and you know that you have about 20 minutes to go get a drink, go to the bathroom and do your thing.

Then you have fighters that come out and you don't get out of your seat for anything because you know somebody is going to get knocked out!

All of Chuck's fights were the latter. We miss you Chuck!

I'd love to see yellow cards, too...

However, its not like PRIDE didn't have its share of colossally boring matches. Ricardo Arona was better than a prescription strength sleep aid.

I could get behind the idea. Warnings for constantly backing up and refusing to engage. Eventual point deductions.

At the very least it would let guys know they are expected to fight.

The yellow cards are great when they aren't used to merely deduct money from Koreans. Smaller cage is a good idea too. There was a lot more finishes in the WEC days.

Chuck has a very good point. He's probably my favorite of all time. You would think that "of the night " bonuses would add some incentive.

Another thing is if you go out there and put on a nice show and lose you have a really good chance on keeping your job.

Watch some recent Super Fight League fights, it's hilarious how the ref is warning for a stand-up almost before a take-down is complete. I don''t agree with it, but it's funny to watch.
