There’s a lot of things I would change in the sport. First of all, the time, there’s no time, no round. Seriously, I believe it is stupid, the round. If you want to see who’s the best man, let them fight, you know? Fifteen minutes or maybe 25 minutes for the championship. No rounds. Why the round? Why are we trying to be like boxing? We’re not boxers — they did rounds to be like boxing to be accepted as a sport. Yeah, of course, 100 percent (there would be more finishes). No rounds. I think it’s ridiculous. 100 percent I would rather fight with a rule like this, I think it’s more honest, like, who’s the better man? Let them fight.

There would certainly be more finishes.

He seems to say we should get rid of time limits all together and then goes back on it though. That one is really the one that matters. Some fighters may be able to outpoint someone for 25 minutes but would never be able to finish them. Nick Diaz comes to mind. I think he would very rarely lose a fight if it just went until someone got finished.

If they made fights a straight 15-25 min do you guys think judging would be better or worse? I'd like to see the effects a rule like this would have on the entire scene.

I was thinking the same thing. The fights would get really boring.

If we really wanted to know who would win a fight we would take out all the rules and that also seems silly. Although, I do think some of the rules like 12-6 elbows and knees to downed opponents should be allowed.

LOL GSP would love this rule. He'd only have to get 1 TD a fight

Only if it came with a no stand ups rule.

Not necessarily. I can't think of a time that he's been stood up before...

Weren't rounds introduced in order to appease the athletic commissions so that mma could actually be sanctioned?

Boxing commissions.

Its well past time the sport was divorced from having to look like boxing to be legitimate.

They tried that already...it failed miserably.

I remember it being pretty succesful (in the sense that there were more finishes and the fights were exciting) in the UFC at the time with a few exceptions (Dan Severn Ken Shamrock is the worst fight I've ever seen). Rounds were brought in to appease the sanctioning bodies. Pride had some pretty boring super long fights though.

I like having rounds, it prevents a lot of sloppy fights imo

Call it a draw if no finish?

You wouldn't have to. You could still have judges.

And decisions would change from something you see all the time, that sometimes means it was a boring fight, to a rare occurrence that means the fighters were very evenly matched.
