That's nice that he can hit harder, but can he defend a takedown or throw a kick now? He never had a problem flattening people with punches and I always felt his gas tank was linked to his bum knees.

There are plenty of ways to punch, not one right way. According to guys like Freddie Roach, Fedor doesn't know how to punch either. He fights nothing like an American boxer.

Also, it can be a really bad idea to mess with a guys game when he's been fighting as long as Shogun. Tweaks and improvements are fine, but trying to change something as fundamental as the way he punches.....

Whats that golfer's name who just screwed himself by changing his swing?

Cal Ripken Jr. changed his batting stance practically every year he played baseball. And what a schmuck he turned out to be.

Wasn't talking about Tiger Woods.

Some golfer. ESPN has been talking about it for a while now. I don't follow golf.

it is Rory Mcllroy. He just signed with Nike and changed clubs. he is ranked #1 right now. but he has been sucking ever since he has changed clubs at the start of the year.

I think it was Ernie Els that changed his swing and went through a really rough patch before rebounding

No one is asking Shogun to change his gloves.

mma fans get defensive over this idea but just in terms of punching ability, the mma fighter has been very bad for most of the sport's history. The modern guys at MW and lower are starting to become pretty solid. A handful of LHW and HW are ok.

The old school strikers of 2005 and earlier would mostly have gotten killed by boxers in a straight up striking match. Wanderlei, Shogun, Liddell, Gomi, etc....they really weren't very good with their hands.

Those guys were great at mma in that era because they brought big power striking mixed with a sprawl and brawl ability that clobbered all the rasslers and BJJ guys.

Are you saying they would have lost in a Boxing match or a striking match? Because the same can be said for the modern day mma fighter and boxer in a boxing match. Same can be said for any discipline. GSP has great wrestling but he would get worked by an Olympic wrestler in a straight wrestling match.

But if you put Cro Cop and Lenox Lewis in the ring during their primes and allowed kicks I'd have a hard time accepting you telling me Cro cop would have been killed.

Shogun got past elite competition early in his career due to his athleticism and his speed/power compensating for his lack of tactics and technique.

Refining technique is the most important thing for a fighterto do when they lose their natural attributes. Shogun gets hit more because hes slowing down and his skillset is more limited.

Tiger Woods? He's gone through like 4 swing changes or so over his career

edit: just realized half this thread is about golf
yeah McIlroy might be who you were referring to, but it's his clubs more so than his swing

If folks are saying Shogun was never good at striking, they're completely ill-informed. He has a sharp hard-style muay thai game, just like most Brazilians. He essentially took apart Machida at mid-range in their first fight and certainly in their second, and he's no slob on the feet.

Shogun's problem is that he's roughly 250 years old in terms of ring time. Trained at a gym where KOs are common and you train beyond exhaustion, has had several fights that take years off your fighting life if not your actual life, and his knees are destroyed.

If you look at guys who follow the Chute Boxe training methods, they all fall to pieces in later life. Forrest Griffin, Tito Ortiz, etc trained the same way and look how many injuries they've piled up.
