Renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach was brought onboard Mauricio Rua’s training camp for UFC 161 to help Rua with his striking. Rua is known for his muay-thai game but according to Roach, when it comes to technical punches, Rua wasn’t properly taught how to throw them.

Roach spoke to GracieMag on his work with Rua:

“I was studying a lot of tape on him to get an idea of how he fights”; “He didn’t know how to transfer his weight too well, and he wasn’t a very big puncher at first,” Roach stated “Once we got him pivoting and punching off the right foot, keeping his boxing stance, he punched really, really hard when he did it correctly.”

This new power could be a turning point in the 31-year old’s career especially after someone like Roach claims that before his work with Rua:

“I don’t think he was ever taught how to do it correctly.”

This, along with a new cardiovascular program that Roach plans to introduce to Rua, could transform the former light-heavyweight champion into a whole new fighter.

I've been waiting a long time for this rematch, I think Shogun wins this as long as he doesn't box with Lil Nog.

There are plenty of ways to punch, not one right way. According to guys like Freddie Roach, Fedor doesn't know how to punch either. He fights nothing like an American boxer.

Also, it can be a really bad idea to mess with a guys game when he's been fighting as long as Shogun. Tweaks and improvements are fine, but trying to change something as fundamental as the way he punches.....

Whats that golfer's name who just screwed himself by changing his swing?

I am pretty sure Roach knows what he is doing.

Part of Shogun's cardio problem is a result of him throwing everything into his punches, so it can only help him.

Shogun needs to get Dida out of his life if he wants to compete at the elite level. Someone needs to push him.

I don't know but didn't Woods change his a bunch of times? The only thing that ever hurt his game was losing that hot ass wife of his.

You are correct, he fired his previous couch when things started going down the tube. That certainly didn't help him get right back on top but that whole mess with his wife etc was really what prompted the change and the crappy outtings.

To my knowledge Tiger has completely changed his swing on at least 3 occasions and he seems to be doing pretty well. However, this is more of the exception than the rule. In general it is highly counterproductive to completely change a fundamental part of your game deep into your career but if anyone can get Rua to respond to may just be Roach.

I don't know you hear about MLB pitchers changing their throwing motion all the time. Some it works for some it does not. I'd have a hard time standing on one side of the debate or the other.

His legs are gone so he really needs to do some reinventing, his takedowns have improved, now he needs to work on that head movement and find some cleaner punching, he 's not finished he's just a different fighter than the one we used to know.

Wasn't talking about Tiger Woods.

Some golfer. ESPN has been talking about it for a while now. I don't follow golf.
