In an appearance on The MMA Hour, legendary UFC ref Big John McCarthy didn't hold back with his criticism of his fellow referees.

Winslow's stand up in that Volkmann fight was absolutely horrendous. Never forget.

I understand some of the guard stand ups, especially when the top guy just wanted his take down and borderline ineffective ground strikes and the bottom guy is just locking up without attempted anything other than breaking posture. The ones I can't stand are the transitional positions or sub setups that need some time to complete, by applying different pressure, wrenching, etc. I seem to remember Story vs Brenneman being chalk full of those standups. In general though, this isn't as big of a deal to me as not stopping fence grabs, failing to deduct points in those cases, and late stoppages. Sadly, those seem to happen more often than the terrible standup calls.

If they removed stand ups completely you'd see a lot more butterfly guard, sweeps and vicious G&P. I see a lot of these guys get taken down so they just lock up the dude on top and pray that it's boring enough to get the stand up.

I hate stand ups in general couldn't agree more. I hate seeing fighters look to the ref to stand them up.If you don't like it do something.

Stands up from any position other than guard should be 100% outlawed.
I get that you don't want people stalling and all, but once the guy passes guard (even to half guard) I say let them fight.
Stand ups are a major interruption in the normal course of the fight and can radically change the outcome.

I agree
Stand ups should be outlawed
If a guy earns a takedown the only way the fight should see the feet again is if the other man earns his way back to them

Completely disagree with banning standups. I am not going to pay $900/ticket to watch somebody like Ben Askren bear hug somebody in half guard for 4 minutes a round without looking to finish the fight. Explain that one to the sponsors

The easy option to all this is pay the refs more so more people would want to do it. Its a pretty thankless job and from what I've heard its not great pay. If the pay rose more educated people would apply and then the standard of refs would rise. This would mean more action on the ground, less unwarranted stand ups and less stalling by those looking to just hold on for a decision. Its a world recognised sport now and the standard of the refs is pathetic. I honestly think 90% of the guys on here could do a better job than the likes of Kim Winslow an Miragliotta.
Both sides have good arguments but it boils down to poor refereeing. I don't see why guys like Herb Dean, Big John and . . . well they are the only two I can think of, don't approach the athletic commission and petition them with a list of criteria that they think a ref should have attained before being allowed to get in there.
