I moved out at 18. Back again for a few months at 20. Then back out with my girlfriend (now wife) later at 20. Ive been fairly independent. My parents are great tho. They have always been there to help when needed. The wife and I are currently renting, but are preparing to move into our first house in April of this year.

Pretty much how my parents are, been living with my wife for 8 years since I was 25, but they have helped when help was needed.

Moved out at 21 and i'm 28 now.
A word of advice for those of you still living with your parents.

Save all the money you can and don't even think about leaving until you've accumulated at least 5 grand or so. Deposits are expensive and you'll need all those things you take for granted. .............Like furniture and a fridge.

Also try to accumulate those things while living at home. such as furniture and things of that nature, you can always rent storage space for when the time comes to get a place.

Oh and your sugar coating that list. Vaccum, Broom, dust pan, cleaning supplies, a plunger, Pots and Pans, but the worst by far is FOOD! My advice is learn to cook before you leave as well because going out to eat will kill you.

I went to Culinary School so that was never an issue but the amount of people, guys mostly that cannot cook or know the basics is really astounding. I can put meals together pretty easily and freeze a lot of things for the week or next few weeks.

Out at 26...while spending a lot of time at my gf's house (now wife) the year or two prior.

I agree with the idea of saving as much as you can prior to moving out, it only gets harder to save later (wife/house/kids etc...).

Also, hand-me-downs of all types of home furnishings are a huge help when getting started. We pretty much said yes to everything anyone was unloading.

joined the military at 18, moved back in at 23 for a few years. i had saved a bunch of money from deployments and was planning on buying a house with it but ended up getting a killer deal on 2 houses on one lot to use as rentals. buying the rentals kind of trapped me in my parents house for a while while i saved for my own house to live in. the wait was worth it because im 26 and i own 3 houses. with only one $300 dollar mortgage payment.

Over 550 movies and add another 100 plus Ufc DVDs
I even got a soda machine and a popcorn maker in my bedroom surround sound in both bedroom and living room

Got kicked out at 14, lived with friends until 16, got kicked back out a few months later. In and out of jail for a while...never really lived at home I guess. The curse of being poor, white and living in the ghetto in South Pheonix. Joined the military and never looked back, now I own a home, have two suv's, make about 80kthe a year if you include the sick benefits...3 kids and I am the only one who is employed. Then again I also had to do four tours....so you give and take in the military, but it sure changed my life.

Why was it a bad idea? Just wondering as last apartment I had I shared a townhouse with my 3 brothers. We're brothers, very close, but 2 of the 3 are slobs, im a neat freak so you could imagine.

Just wondering

moved out at 19 with my gf. had to stop going to school to work full time. home depot and academy sports and outdoors until december of last year. now i have a job with dow chemical making a shit ton compared to what i was. back in school also.

i can attest to the fact that food is expensive. there are times when ill have like 5 items and its 40 bucks. back before my current job i couldnt go past 20 bucks for food. my diet included alot of half priced yogurt and dinty moore beef stews. i personally cannot stand ramem as the sodium content is outrageous.
electricity got cut off multiple times. we really struggled for a little while

im 22 by the way and things are finally looking up.

I should really make a cheap, good food thread, also for people to add to it their recipes and what they do for cheap good food

I am one of the few members of my family to move out of state.

I rent out a ridiculously expensive "studio" apartment that I would be too embarassed to admit how much I pay for. But if I can't live in a place where I can't walk around in my underwear with MMA and Porn on a continious loop in the TV, then life ain't worth living!

well since i was w/ my gf, we had little privacy. there was ALWAYS someone home so it was rare we had moments to ourselves.
also, one was a good friend whom we found to have very annoying living habits. it took me 9 months of not living w/ him to finally look forward to hanging out w/ him again.

i wouldnt ever say not to have roommates, but i would warn everyone to choose them wisely
