UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre states the reason he wanted to face Nick Diaz is because in his mind he was the No. 1 contender for the belt.

The long reigning champion was quizzed on Wednesday during a UFC 158 pre-fight press conference in Montreal about his decision to ask the UFC to face Diaz instead of current top contender Johny Hendricks.

St-Pierre says there were a few factors at work, including the fact that it was the fight the fans wanted to see most.

He's not the only one. I think he lost to Pierce too.

I agree that Koscheck won that fight, but we all know judges are stupid and we have to sadly accept this

I don't agree with this sentiment. I can't imagine the backlash if Anderson said this about Chael's fight with Bisping (I would probably have jumped on board with this ).

GSP vs Diaz will be more entertaining than GSP-Hendricks would be.

I think the accusations of being boring, and playing it safe got to Georges a little.

GSP would have to be cautious against Hendricks, not so much against Diaz as he doesn't have that Big K.O. power.

So now GSP is a judge? lol stop it! just say it, the bigger money fight is Diaz and GSP is figuring he doesn't have many fights left on that bum knee so he is trying to make the $$$$$ its ok. Hendricks is going to beat Ellenberger and get his shot against whom ever wins.

Other than when he one punched Fitch Hendricks has struggled with wrestlers. Ellenburger stands a better chance than almost everyone is giving him.

he may have possibly lost to Kos, but since then he has Ko'd some of the very best fighters in the weight class. the Kos fight happened to long ago now to be relevant IMO. i think hendricks deserves the title shot as much as anybody else.

i think diaz is a safer fight for GSP. i dont see GSP getting Ko'd by diaz or subbed out whereas hendricks' left hand and wrestling is always dangerous because he only needs to land one good shot and anybody will go to sleep.

Won.

At least on many people's score cards.

So if we are going by who we thought won, rather than who the judges picked, like GSP is, then Nick deserves the shot.

But to be a legit sport we need to accept bad decisions.

So basically your saying that actually winning is irrelevant? Nick lost, got suspended and came back to get a title shot.. where as Hendrix has beat 3 top 5 WW, 2 of them knocked out brutally. I think Gsp is afraid. He knows he has an easy fight in Nick and thats why he wants to fight him.

Hes saying that simply to bring legitimacy to the Diaz fight. In of itself its a highly irrational reason not to fight someone, since it excludes the majority of the facts that give credence to a Hendricks fight. Its a purposeful stance hes taken due to how the situation has played out. Hes speakinhg tactically.

Also, Hendricks beat the breaks off of Koscheck in that third round and kos's takedowns amounted to nothing more than control. Just my opinion. Pierce was much closer of a fight to me. Shit, pierce against Kos, Hendricks, and fitch were all closer to me than Kos v. Hendricks
