Dominick Cruz underwent another major knee surgery this past week, and it'll likely further delay his return to the octagon.
Trainer Eric Del Fierro today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Cruz's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was replaced after his body rejected one from a cadaver.
The UFC bantamweight champion is in Los Angeles today to meet with a doctor who will give him a timeline for his return, DelFierro said, though he estimated it could set the fighter back another six to nine months.
Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) underwent corrective surgery in June after tearing his ACL in preparation for a rematch with Urijah Faber, who coached opposite him on "The Ultimate Fighter 15." The two were scheduled to meet at UFC 148 on July 2, but Cruz was forced out of the fight, and Renan Barao went on to beat Faber to claim an interim title at UFC 149.

Man... I can't see him being the same fighter if and when he returns. This is very unfortunate. The one positive is that there's no excuse for Barao to not defend his interim belt against McDonald now.

I'm not the biggest fan of Dominick but, I hope he can over come this obstacle. I'd hate to see a great fighter lose everything he has worked so hard for.

Agreed. For a fighter who relies so heavily on great speed and reflexes, this type of injury will probably effect him more than most. Hope he can recover.

Man this is a real bummer. He was really becoming a dominant champ with 4 consecutive title defences (combining the wec & Ufc). I'm not sure how optimistic I am about him returning to where he was before but ill be rooting him up none the less.

terrible timing too, his marketability was rising and ufc was pushing for him to become a start too.

It's messed up but it's true, even if he does come back (despite what GSP just did) do we really want to see him square off as a champion after two years of being sidelined with a serious injury like this. Fast track him for sure, but one or two fights will probably be necessary for him to shine like he used to.

my buddy had an ACL surgery and the doc's used a piece of his patella tendon. they said it will be stronger than his natural ACL. hopefully they do something like this on cruz. because my friend said his is as good as ever

I've had cadaver transplants and patella grafts and the transplants seemed to last longer for me. Granted the patellas were done first and the way they had you rehab and treat the joint at home were a lot different than they are now. They rush your ass off crutches now and encourage bending it a LOT, back then they had you keep it straight unless your were in the CPM machine.
Either way, Cruz's style is so movement based that I can't see this not being devastating for his career. He was borderline top 5 P4P before the injury, I don't know what to expect at all now.

I'm a huge Barao fan, would love to see him fight Mayday, though! - That would be fireworks.
I personally think you'll be hearing Barao's name for ages to come, the guy is absolutely unreal. I think he beats Cruz as well.
