Like most everyone else in the mixed martial arts business, Montreal-based trainer Firas Zahabi has opinions on whom his most famous protege, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, should fight next.
The way Zahabi sees it, with Carlos Condit out of the way after GSP's UFC 154 victory, there are plenty of good options available at 170 pounds: Nick Diaz. Johny Hendricks. Anderson Silva.
Wait ... Anderson Silva at welterweight? Isn't that expected to be a catchweight super fight, if the bout is made?

There is absolutely no way that Anderson can make 170, especially with his new sparring partner, Aaron Sanchez.

At 170 Silva would be drained enough that GSP could wrestle a decision win. IF Silva was going to agree to 170, which he will not, even with the opportunity to hold two belts simultaneously in UFC.
GSP will have to give and the fight will take place at 177 or so. Silva will outweigh him by 20 pounds and knock him out. But GSP will be rewarded handsomely for his time.

Another option would be to have the fight at 177, but have weigh ins the day of the fight. This would limit how much weight Silva could put back on. Not sure if this is possible logistics wise in terms of the PPV, promotions etc., but it would help equalize/limit the size differential.

Well, this is the nature of a superfight. There's really no way to create a "fair" superfight. Jones would be much bigger than Silva if they fought, just like Silva will be much bigger than GSP if they fight. Personally, I give GSP a much better chance against Silva than some people seem too, at least a 30% chance. Smart money is obviously on Silva, but I'm pretty shocked at the opposition this proposed fight has received.

This is just an example of Zahabi being biased towards his boy.

Sounds like a legit concern to me and makes total sense....Even at 170 Silva would balloon up the next day and still out weigh GSP by 10 pounds...

Silva used to fight at 168lbs but I assume that was when he was much younger and getting there now will probably be difficult. GSP doesn't cut much weight to be at 170 (he's pretty stable at that size) and has said that his body doesn't really give him much leeway to go up and down in size at will, like many other fighters can.
It would obviously be an interesting 'superfight' and huge PPV dollars, but I really don't think they should entertain it until GSP has a couple of other fights under his belt since he's returned. That puts it out at least another year, and who knows when Silva wants to retire but... I still think that Silva v Bones should be what they're pushing for. I get why neither of them want to fight each other (since they both have a good chance of losing), but I agree with other sentiments that Silva is picking on the wrong guy here. I really don't see how they'd be able to settle on a catchweight that would satisfy both sides and make things fair.
Firas is just saying "hey, Silva come down to 170lbs and it's on". We know Silva can't/won't, and hence thoughts of the superfight will get indefinitely postponed yet again. It's the right strategy coming from their camp at this point.
