UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva said he will not move up to fight light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, quashing all hopes of a possible mega-bout.

Silva made his reasons known Thursday during a media call to promote his upcoming 205-pound bout against Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153 on Oct. 13 in Rio de Janeiro.

"There's always been a lot of talk about me moving up to 205," said Silva, who successfully has defended his title a UFC-record 10 times. "I know (UFC president) Dana (White) has talked about it and all the fans have talked about me moving up and facing Jon Jones.

"But it's something I've never wanted. I won't be pretentious and say that I'd want to move up, especially because there are other guys in the weight class and on our team like Rafael Feijao (Cavalcante) and (Antonio Rogerio) Minotoro Nogueira, guys who could potentially face Jon Jones in the future.

"What got me this far is that I'm grounded; my weight class is 185 and I'm 37 years old. I feel I need to be honest and continue to build what I've built and that is to keep defending my belt at 185."

Yeah if you say so Anderson

Money talks. If the paycheck was big enough I bet you'd do it. If you weren't worried about losing so much you would do it.

Oh well. Im not a fan of either of you anyways

aka he would rather fight someone a weightclass below where he would have a distinct size advantage if he were to sign a superfight.

And in what universe is Feijao and Lil Nog anywhere near a title fight? You want to defend your belt but yet you avoided a fight with Weidman.

so much

Exactly. Last week he's campaigning for a fight with GSP and when he gets asked about Jones he wants to stay at 185 and defend his belt.

Exactly. Pretty hyocritcal. I would for GSP to be the guy to beat Andy and break his winning streak.

Personally I think Silva and Jones are scared of each other.

He's running out of options. I cant blame him for not wanting to spoil the incredible run he's had but I know he was ducking Chael, is ducking Weidman, is ducking Jones, and is running out of time.

He better get ready for Weidman and hope Boetsch wins..... Maybe we'll see Bisping.

I thought it was a totally reasonable and straight forward explanation.

I'm surprised he's getting hate for this. At least he didn't doge the issue, he said he doesn't want the fight and told us why. That sort of directness should be applauded.

Why not just retire if all of a sudden he is ducking everyone? If hes worried about his streak why not end it? Walk away and be the best of his time? I have a hard time accepting any of that when I belive GSP has a better chance then Weidman.

Should be but he gets flak because those same reasons dont seem to apply for smaller fighters or lower 205ers. Granted the 2 fights he has against 205ers that werent top 10 were both fill ins.

So you're fighting Bonnar at LHW at UFC 153 right?

Just stop it Silva and fight Weidman.

then explain the hypocrisy that he would fight GSP but not Jones. Both would be huge paychecks and at this point in time, Jones is the fight more fans would rather see. His explanation for not fighting Jones because two teammates MIGHT fight him is a joke. Lil Nog hasn't fought in almost a year and is borderline top 10 (I have him outside) after losing to Davis and Bader. Feijao is in a different promotion and is facing a 1 year suspension. Hypothetically by the time either of these guys get a title shot at Jones if he is the champion, Silva will be 39-40 years old.

Then he goes and makes a comment about wanting to defend his MW title yet he avoided the Weidman fight at all costs.

Personally I think it is just a tactic to get paid more for fighting Jones

Ever the optimist eh? Don't get your hopes up.

I'm not sure I see any hypocrisy.

I will explain why I think he wants to fight GSP and not Jon Jones. It's easy really.

GSP is much closer to his size. Jon Jones is much bigger than him. GSP has held the title for much longer than Jones and has a bigger legacy.

Also, where are you getting your facts about more people wanting Jones vs Silva than GSP vs Silva?? I'd be interested to see your polling data. I would expect that GSP is still better known by the casual fans and considered a bigger star than Jon Jones.

Now let me ask you about some hypocrisy.

Why are you hating on Silva for saying that he doesn't want to fight Jon Jones but you aren't hating on GSP for not wanting to fight Silva??

Better yet, why aren't you hating on Jon Jones for not wanting to fight Silva?

By your logic:

GSP is scared of Anderson.
Jon Jones is scared of Anderson.
Anderson is scared of Jon Jones.

If all those things were true then these guys should probably find another profession. It seems more likely to me that they aren't scared, rather they are resisting pressures by fans and Dana White to take fights that aren't good for their careers.

I didn't know 5'10 was closer to 6'2 then 6'2 is to 6'4. Good to know.
