Dave Bautista spent the better part of a decade pretending to get punched in the face as a pro wrestler. Now that the 43-year-old heavyweight is less than a week away from his first chance to do it for real as a mixed martial arts fighter, he can hardly wait.

The question he keeps hearing over and over – the one he can't seem to supply a satisfactory answer to – is, why?

"I know some people have a hard time understanding it," said the former World Wrestling Entertainment champion, who's set to make his professional MMA debut in Providence, R.I., on Saturday (pay-per-view, $29.95). "I'm obviously never going to make the money that I made in the WWE, and it's not like I think I'm going to go become UFC champion."

So why do it? Why suffer through an eight-week training camp, which Bautista described as "by far the hardest thing" he's ever done, just to fight on the small circuit against an unknown opponent?

"I just want the experience," he said. "I don't have any ulterior motive. I just want to do it because I love it so much."

At least he is level headed about his approach to MMA. I remember seeing a few videos of him training with Crump, Big Dave is definitely pretty fast. He probably is the least experienced without having had any real background in fighting like some other "Celebs" that make the crossover.

It's too bad he waited until 43 years old to go after something that is his passion. I'd say the big WWE bucks had something to do with that.

His original opponent Rashid Evans (1-2) got scratced from the card and his opponent is still TBD. My guess would have been Bautista would have steam rolled Evans with a roughly 40 lbs. weight advantage.

He waited too long. He also better get off that WWE juice. This is just my opinion but I don't think he'd be passing a drug test anytime soon.

i dont see why anyone would have a problem with him in trying this. He clearly states he is only doing this because he loves the sport of mma, he says he knows it too late and wont be in the UFC but wants to at least try this in his lifetime. gotta give him some props for having the balls to try something he has always wanted when most people will never take that chance.

Basically the same thing as Hershel Walker, but like 10 years earlier

He left WWE over two years ago.

There's no way. I can't believe that there is an AC out there that would sanction that fight. DC would absolutely dismantle him.

Don't trust those guys. I know people like to think that they are "cool" and "unlike any other MMA website" but from my work experience, they don't do their research and even go as far as to flat out lie in their stories.
