Michael McDonald won’t be 22 years old until January. There’s a chance -- if the cards fall in his favor, and his hand is healthy enough to chin-hunt, and UFC matchmakers throw him a bone -- that by the time “Mayday’s” birthday rolls around, he’ll be accessorizing with UFC gold.
It’s a lot of “ifs,” and a few asterisks -- but it’s possible, and the scenario isn’t all that hard to fathom.
Jon Jones was 23 years and 8 months old when he defeated Mauricio Rua for the light heavyweight belt. If Mayday gets a fight with bantamweight interim titleholder Renan Barao in December -- which is the month McDonald has circled for his return -- he could usurp Jones’ feat of becoming the youngest fighter to be a UFC champion. By a full year and a half, no less.
Yeah, yeah -- even if it’s a placeholder belt that is mostly illusion, while the genuine article remains off-limits until Dominick Cruz returns from his ACL injury.
But first things first. The only jones McDonald is dealing with is the one to crush a heavy bag without wincing.

He is next in line for a title shot, correct? I haven't heard anything about Cruz returning yet and I can't think of anyone else deserving of the shot next. It would be cool to see an interim belt defended/usurped.

Mayday is legit. His boxing impresses me more than anyone elses in MMA right now. I'd love to see him KO Barao and Cruz and be the youngest UFC champ in history. The guy seems pretty humble, and VERY well spoken on the microphone. Unless his career took a turn down Jones street, I could see him being a very likable champ.
Of course, he has to get through Barao and Cruz before he gets that gold, the real gold. And that is no small task. To say those guys are both great fighters would be an understatement.

Totally agree with everything you said P$, minus the boxing part, I still like JDS' better, but Mayday is up there.

I'd love to see Barao fight Mayday in January or something. That would be great. Why wait for Cruz?
I'm not sure McDonald would win but I fully believe he's going to be wearing gold in the UFC at some point in his career.

He has a better shot at beating Cruz than Barao.
