After the publicity surrounding the cancellation of UFC 151 - which will forever go down in history as the phantom card that never took place - Jon Jones, who has taken a share of the blame, is now likely to find himself, at least temporarily, as a member of a select group.
You can use the term villain, bad guy, or heel, but it's the big star who goes to the cage with thousands booing their lungs out, hoping to vicariously live through their opponent in seeing them beaten. When one of the fighters is truly hated by the crowd, it can increase ticket sales and it creates a great atmosphere surrounding fights.
But heels in mixed martial arts are very different from those in the movies or in pro wrestling. In the movies, the bad guy is scripted ahead of time and everyone knows the role they have to play. In pro wrestling, the same is true, although it's not as cut and dried, because the live audience sometimes has a mind of its own. Sometimes they like people they are supposed to hate...

This. I'd also add in Nick Diaz as a honorable mention. He's liked now, but early on his career he was hated.

My top heels:
1. Josh Koscheck. Every thing about this guy, from the way he looks to the things he says, gets on my nerves.
2. Tito Ortiz. When I started REALLY following this sport was right around the time that Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture fought for the interim title. Tito was the man to hate at the time and I went bat shit crazy when Randy spanked him in the ring. He's one me over a bit recently though and I cheered when he beat Bader.
3. Brock Lesnar. I hate the way he acts and the way he disrespects people (irrelevant to me whether its for show.) I also hate that he's beaten some people who are WAYYYY more skilled than him technically.
4. Chael Sonnen. This one has been a roller coaster for me. I first started to dislike him after seeing him utilize the "fake tap" in a couple of fights. I was rooting for Filho both times in the WEC. When he came to the UFC I was impressed with him (considering the improvements he'd made since his last stint) and I actually found his trash talking really funny in the lead up to the first fight with Anderson. I even remember getting into an argument with some one on here because I said Chael had a really good shot against Anderson. At some point, the trash talk got to be too much (I didn't like the disrespect he showed after losing the first fight and I didn't like that it looked like he was going to pretend he hadn't tapped) and I really started to dislike him. The JJ situation has won me over a bit though.
5. Rampage. This one probably requires some explaining because he used to be so popular at the time I disliked him. If there was ever a fighter who's nuts I rode, it was Chuck Liddell. I thought that man was invincible and I loved to see him knock people out. I even had a poster of him in my room. When Rampage knocked him out (pretty much out cold) I decried the "early stoppage" and refused to accept that my champion had lost. I never really forgave Rampage until recently.

seriously, fuck mike whitehead. i can say that because he's not a fighter, he's a rapist.
as for the villains, i think tito has got to be the biggest of all time, followed closely by bisping.
