Being proactive paid off for Joe Lauzon last week. The UFC lightweight contender signed on to fight Gray Maynard and says he was the one pushing for the tough match up.
“I saw Gray say in an interview that he wanted to coach the next season of TUF against Nate Diaz,” Joe explains.
“He’s banking on Diaz beating [Ben] Henderson [when the two face off for Henderson’s title] and wants that title shot and, I guess, a third fight between him and Nate. So I contacted [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva and said that I thought Gray and I could be a cool angle as coaches of TUF. They didn’t do that but later I got a call asking if I wanted to fight Gray on December 29th. Its on the main card of a huge card.”

I'm not bashing either guy but those two don't scream ratings to me.

Would be good coaches. Would hate to have to listen to Gray, though. Shame it's a ratings game, otherwise there could be some good coaches for TUF.

I agree with you. When these 2 guys fight it should be a great scrap. Lauzon always seems to get 'Of the Night Awards'. Both guys will definitely bring it come fight night. Gray is one tough dude. Only loss coming to Frankie Edgar, whose a beast and could arguably still be champ. If Lauzon can pull off this win, somehow, it would be his greatest accomplishment thus far. I'm still gonna have to go with the Bully Maynard though. Great wrestler and the dude hits as hard as anyone in the division. Ask Clay Guida. Never mind he was too busy running scared to death of Gray so he wouldn't know.

His bank account agrees it would be a good angle
Although I like him, I'd only really want to see Nate Diaz as a coach

I dont know why anyone would want to be a tuf coach seems as of late the fight doesn't happen. I think a good idea would be to have 2 hall of fame fighters and bring in a good coaching staff to help run the show.

I thought about the same thing. Bringing in like Couture to be coach.
But the casual fan probably wants to see the coaches have a fight at the end of the season.
I for one, would rather see good coaches rather than a coaches fight at the end of the season. I don't need to see Koscheck, Lesnar, Rampage as coaches.

It certainly makes more sense than Roy and Carwin for coaches but then again I don't care about that show anymore so meh
