TUNICA, Miss. – It's possible, but for now, it's anything but definite.

With Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BFC) likely out of action until early 2013, the organization has given some consideration to an interim title fight between tournament winners Daniel Straus (20-4 MMA, 6-1 BFC) and Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (17-1 MMA, 5-1 BFC).

Ultimately, Bellator Chair and CEO Bjorn Rebney said it'll depend on the champ's recovery timetable.

Curran, a top-five featherweight, and Straus and Freire (who both rank among the division's top 15) have made Bellator's 145-pound class one of its most competitive. However, Curran, who won the title in thrilling fashion from Joe Warren in March, recently pulled out of a Bellator 73 title fight with Freire due to a broken orbital bone.

I like this move to keep the division going. Even though it's a rematch, and Pitbull's last fight was Strauss. Patricio has been sitting out for well over a year now

Interims always make sense to me....if your out for six months then your going to need at least 6-8 weeks for a camp, and then you'll probably want a warm up fight....could be a year plus before you seriously defend your title. As a fan, and I am sure most fighters agree, I would prefer not to backlog an entire weight class for one fighter....no matter who he is.

Pitbull has not fought once since beating Straus 5/21/2011.

Straus has fought and won 4 times since that fight.

Bellator needs to be working out kinks like these along with the tournament and champions defending their belts instead of just superfights.

Pitbull hasn't fought in like 15 months, after fighting once a month in his three straight wins for the tournament. 1 in march, 1 april, 1 may.

You would think he would ask for another fight or something unless he had some injury time off too. Also, would think he needs some income coming in.

The reason Pitbull has been out was due to injury on multiple occasions. A fight between him and Straus makes sense at this point. I would actually favor Straus in the rematch due to Pitbull's time off and the continued improvement of Straus. It seems that he has really started to implement his size advantage and wrestling advantage in his last few fights.

Pitbull dominated and shut him out the first time, look Strauss is a good grinder type but he's never going to be elite, he doesn't shine anywhere where as Pitbull has potential to be one of the greatest FW's and obviously one of the more unappreciated FW's out there. I had him beating Curran pretty handily even with that year layoff, and he should be champion right now anyway if it weren't for that retarded ref in the Warren fight.
