Seven days ago, Tim Sylvia told his friend and longtime training partner Sherman Pendergarst that he was coming back to the big show after four years away from it.

The next day, Pendergarst succumbed to cancer after a long fight, and Sylvia received another punch to the stomach when he heard he wasn't signed. But he held out hope that it was part of a PR plan.

When Sylvia (30-7) learned it wasn't, and later found out that Frank Mir would be fighting Daniel Cormier in Strikeforce instead of him, he was "shocked." But as he today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), he plans to fight on.

"I love to fight," Sylvia said. "I still want to do it. I still can do it, and I think I'm still one of the top 20 in the world."

Sylvia still isn't sure what happened between this week and last. As far as he knew, he was a lock to fight Cormier in the Strikeforce cage. His manager, Monte Cox, had struck a deal to do a six-week training camp with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla., as part of his preparation.

"I knew that we were in contract negotiations," Sylvia said of a previously reported deal to fight Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ at an event planned for Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, Calif. "They asked if I would fight Daniel Cormier. Monte asked if I wanted that fight, and I said absolutely. He says, 'I'm going to try and work a deal to where you fight him and then after the fight, win, lose or draw, you get to fight in the UFC.' I said, 'That's great. That's what we wanted.'"

Tim shouldve learned from Ricco, if you leave the UFC and let yourself go people arent going to take you seriously. Even if you get back into shape. And no, beating Marius and Paul doesnt make me interested.

Just because of his name, draw and how bad I feel for him I say the Barnett shot would be a stern and serious test. If he can perform admirably and not get tkoed or submitted in the first round then go ahead and bring him back in. I dont see him beating Barnett but again if performs well then I say start him up against Nelson, Schaub or Struve....win against them or leave you know.

To me, there are two reasons why it's worth it to watch him fight again

One, to see him smashed up again.

Two, the lack of heavyweights with a name makes it possible for a 'top 20er' to be included in the UFC

Timmy could have been huge, he chose to get fat.

How do you not know that you aren't signed with a company? Did he just put this out there in the hopes that Strikeforce wouldn't notice that he isn't on their roster? Well damn, I hereby declare that i'm fighting Anderson Silva for the MW title at the next PPV.

I'm not sure whether they got as far as a verbal agreement or not, but I'm assuming that they were close to signing a deal with him. If I was to guess what happened exactly, I'd say...Zuffa was in talks with Timmy and a couple of other guys, they released the info about Timmy to the public prior to signing a contract to gauge fan interest, and ultimately went with another fighter. If they had the details hammered out and on the verge of signing, I could see why he felt this way when you consider there were also news reports stating this to be true. The other theory would be that they originally couldn't convince someone on the UFC roster to transition to Strikeforce for the fight, but Frank changed his mind for whatever reason.

You're going to get your ass beat, but best of luck out there. I hope you've been working on your double legs

After Kongo vs Jordan, Sylvia seems like a good addition to the roster to me.
